DJ Premier Says Black Thought “Bodied” Eminem & Yasiin Bey In Cypher

As the main deejay behind BET’s Hip Hop Awards Cypher, DJ Premier has seen plenty emcees kick rhymes for the series. During a recent interview with The Combat Jack Show, Premier revealed insight about the cyphers, the emcees and his concerns about Justin Bieber not writing his own raps.

During the conversation, Premier was asked who the top verse came from when Eminem, Black Thought and Yasiin Bey (formerly Mos Def) linked up.

“I’m not even being politically correct,” Premier said. “I loved everybody’s verses but Black Thought bodied that. Bodied it. Hands down. Eminem got busy on the Shady cypher when they did it themselves, with Slaughterhouse, Yelawolf and him? That was a fun shoot.”

The Eminem, Yasiin Bey and Black Thought cypher can be viewed below, followed by the Shady cypher.

Later in his conversation with The Combat Jack Show, Premier clarified issues with Bieber.

“A lot of people think I pick the artists and I don’t,” he shared, before addressing the Bieber situation.

According to Premier, he was asked about his thoughts regarding a Bieber appearance in a cypher.

“I was like, ‘As long as he spits a dope verse, I don’t care.’ They said, ‘He might not write it but if it’s dope, would you still be with it?’ I said, ‘If he don’t write it, then he shouldn’t be on there.'”

The interview can be viewed below.

DJ Premier spoke about this in the past, saying that he did not “ban” Bieber from attending. Then, he said he would “love to work with” Bieber.

“I’d love to work with him, just as long as he writes it,” he said when this was first reported. “He’s gotta sit there in front of me and write it. I’d love to work with him and it would be dope.”

    1. eminem killed that cypher…dj premier is tripping , maybe even racist but im not acusing anyone of anything

      1. EMINEM killed that shit black thought was and after thought , but i cant forget the Mos def hes was dope aswell

      2. im gonna call you guy lassie..bec your fetching HARD. im white and like eminem over all them guuys–EM was the weakest (still a great verse)

    2. Black thought been a Beast before i even knew who eminem was orangix do you want more?!!! illadelphalflife.

    3. Mos Def and Black Thought were both far better. Eminem is not lyrical. He just says goofy shit, shouts and uses multiple syllables, to hide his weak lyrics. Eminem either pretends to be crazy or cries about his mom, hailey and kim in every song. He has no substance. Mos and Black Thought are just better rappers overall. I’m just not impressed…by Eminem.

    4. Em murked that. Check out thegrandreport, they have some cool entertainment news and videos on there too

    5. Hahaha, Preme said that lil nigga biebs gotta write the verse in front of him.. Lol Preme said he dont truss him. FUNNY ISH

    6. Eminem suck ass, he never made a classic before in his life just tracks that stand out to the top 40 fags, real hip hop lives with weezy and YMCMB!!!

    7. You fucking cereal? Mos Def all day, Black thought then Em, The words Justin Bieber and BET Cypher dont go…..losing all cred with that shit………….

    8. all cyphers from BET have all been going downhill since mos/Bt/em rocked it hardddddddddddddd

Does anyone know who picks the BET cypher

p.s BT bodied the fuck out of this track, who are the dickriders behind em looking at him all dreamy……fag ass niglets

    9. he act like he said some revelations or somethings.. def blackthought then def then EM.. im a big em supporter as well as the others

but now adays its not hard to body em on a track or a cypher. i go into the song expecting eminem to say some wack shit now so when i hear it and X out of the song and never listen 2 it again..i wont be let down

    10. DJ Premier doesnt like eminem. Ive heard that before numerous times. And in Ems 14 year career why the hell wouldnt preem give him at least one beat…..

    11. If you only judged the verses, Black Thought had the best.

BUT if you take in to the fact that Black Though already spit that verse on the song “Doin It Again.” Mos Def verse somes from Brooklyn We Go Hard (Remix). Em’s verse is original, so then Em wins simply based on skills, originality and technique. I fucking hate Eminem when he raps about bullshit. Imagine if he said shit with substance. He would blow Jay and Nas out of the top because they don’t try lyrically as hard anymore but still are on top though. On a good Shady is top 2 but Jay is goat until Em steps up content. Jay is the best of all time because he has rapped about things the has never been said, he relevancy has surpasses any rapper of his time including Kane, KRS, Rakim, Slick Rick and others, and he sticks to what he knows in terms of success. Eminem would make Jay have to step up or accept number 2 if Eminem had content in his new material.

      1. who cares if he spit it before. eminem wrote his before he spit it. people don’t know what a freestyle. who had the best verse? black thought. point blank period!

    13. COME ON PREEM YOU WOULD DO A TRACK FOR BIEBER?FOR THAT SPOILED FUCKIN BRAT WHO FREESTYLED OVER WHO SHOT YA?YOU DONE TRACKS FOR THE BEST YOU NAME THEM…GURU,BIG L,NAS,CANIBUS,KRS ONE,RAKIM,BIGGIE,GROUP HOME,JERU THE DAMAJA,AFU RA AND MANY MANY MORE…YOU DO TRACKS WITH THE BEST!AND HOW YOU GONNA DO WITH THE WORST?AND AS FAR AS IM CONCERED THAT JUSTIN BITCH AINT EVEN A FUCKIN MC!..HOW THE FUCK YOU GONNA DO A TRACK WIT HIM?PREEMO SHIT AFTER ALMOST 25 YEARS NIGGA YOU TRIPPIN….WHY YOU GOTTA SHOCK US WITH DUMB FUCKING STATEMENTS LIKE THIS?ABOUT 2 MONTHS AGO I HEARD KRS ONE SAYING LIL WAYNE IS HIS SON AND HE IS HIP HOP…TO ALL THOSE WHO ARE DOPE PLEASE SAYING INSANE SHIT LIKE THIS BECAUSE IT MAKES ME BUG OUT…WTF!!!…justin bieber feat dj premier?!!!!!!!!!

    14. Im sorry “Prem”, but respectfully diagree with you. “EM murked that shit! EM is top 5 alive!

      1. how did he murk it talking about delai lamas, llamas and random things that were not connected but rhymed? FOH!

      2. “I’m a cross between Osama, Dama, Obama, and the Dali Lama”

He’s sayin he’s a combination of all of them. Meaning he’s crazy, smart, powerful, and peaceful all at the same time. Let’s put our thinking cap on folks.

      3. How come all of these people defending Eminem can’t spell “Dahmer” (the serial killer). What the hell is a “Dama”?

And Eminem’s line is straight nonsense: he’s a cross between a serial killer, a terrorist and a pacifist? That’s pure idiocy. He’s just stringing together names that rhyme with no sense of the literal meaning of what he’s saying, which is my major problem with post-Eight Mile Em attempts to get lyrical. For some unknown reason now he can’t spit multis without foregoing making literal sense now. I want MMLP Em back, already. Sigh.

      4. That’s not to mention that he’s deliberate mispronouncing Dahmer to make it fit the rhyme scheme, although rappers have been dropping the -er for an -a sound for years now, I still knock off points for it when guys like Black Thought (except on Illadelph Halflife) go through the effort of actually finding words that rhyme based on how the words are actually pronounced in the real world.

      5. first off it’s called a slant rhyme retard. you know how corny rap would sound if every word rhymed exactly? go listen to the roots you’ll see black thought slant rhyming all the time.

second of all it’s a freestyle. eminem has always been known for sayin he’s on some out of this world type of shit. sayin he’s a mix between all those things is him just sayin he’s on a different level. don’t take everything so literal, especially a cypher.

they all killed that shit though for real. might be the best cypher i’ve ever heard.

idk why ppl misspell dahmer they must not know who he is.

      6. If you read what I wrote, I’m very aware that lots of people slur words to make a rhyme work. And, no, it’s not called anything, that’s just some dumb phrase you pulled out of a hat, there’s no official book of rap style names.

As I said before, I rate people who rhyme words as they’re actually pronounce and who make literal sense when they rap over people who don’t. In this cipher, that means Black Thought > Eminem. If you like rhymes that don’t make literal sense and don’t rhyme, yay for you.

    15. thought did not bring nothing new. and that verse aint even that hot.. the vocab is super basic. lyrically its between bey and em and em had the originality factor so em takes it.. but to say thought bodied them is an obvious bias

    16. getting tired of Premiers BULLSHIT! Dude should stick to not talking at all.. ..AYO PREM, STICK TO PRODUCING! Eminem DESTROYED that. Yeah that was your opinion but your opinion is WRONG and thats a fact!

    17. Black Thought dominated this but Eminem owned the track. Lyrically, Black Thought is DOPE. I hadn’t heard this in a while, so I took these opinions on board and had another listen. The first few lines Em delivers puts him above, let’s kill the racism people.

    18. who the fuck cares what a DJ thinks about an emcee battle. Premier’s ego has been through the roof lately, first he thinks he can bring wack shit like Joey Badass among emcee greats, now hes talking about bringing Justin Beiber too? wtf is that

      1. who the fuck cares what a DJ thinks about an emcee battle?

This very question proves that we have too many kids claiming to be a part of the Hip Hop culture.

The original purpose of the MC was to hype up the crowd for the DJ. The DJ is the first judge in Hip Hop for the MC.

Less talking and more studying of the culture you are voicing your opinion on kid.

      2. NONO is schooling young’n

DJ Premier is….i do not want to waste time schooling dude, lost cause

    19. If you only judged the verses, Black Thought had the best.

Eminem would make Jay have to step up or accept number 2 if Eminem had content in his new material.

      1. cmon, ems come full circle from spitting stupid stuff to slating his family to writing serious stuff, lyrically jay aint on ems level and how much relevant material as jay really done lyrically jay’s not even a top 5 goat imo, if you basing goat on relevancy nas would take it, but theres so many dif factors to take into account, its a silly discussion that would never get resolved. Back to this if what you say is true em wins this cypher purely on originality, i thought mos def content was deep and initially i liked it most although black thoughts timing to the beat edged the other 2 so they all rocked.

      2. You cant’t compare Eminem to Jay-Z. I think MC comparisons are pointless. Everybody got his own favorites. Some like Souljah Boy and some like Rakim.

    20. I’m a cross between Osama, Dama, Obama, or the Dali Lama…so I’m a knight in shinin’ armor. Mfka he’s killing the syllables and then they come back to life and he killed them again. Preem must be back sniffin coke again.

      1. cosign, Em had me with those lines. all of them killed it, but i would have to give it to either Mos or Shady

    21. hhdx trying to start drama by sayin he said black thought bodied em and mos. he said he bodied IT, meaning the beat itself.

      1. Exactly what i thought after reading and watching the interview.

hhdx got to stop with these false and misleading titles bullshiit just to grap people’s attention

    22. First of all Mos Def is a bitch (crying like a muslim freak over that force fed shit- never really liked him) he should stick to acting

Eminem was meh. Black Thought was meh

    23. Whoever disagrees with the Justin Beiber comment has been completely brainwashed by pop culture & honestly isnt a true hiphop fan. Bieber should NEVER EVER be asked to freestyle at any hiphop cypher. He’s a pop-singer not a rapper. Dont bring that pop shit into a real MC arena. It’s bad enough hiphop has become hippop anyway but we dnt need no more of that shit. Let the rappers rap & singers sing.

      1. Thank u. I swear most of these sheeple don’t know whats real any more. Justin doesn’t stand a chance in hell.

    24. Really Premo? Em’s verse was the only original verse. Black Thought and Mos def’s were both lyrics from songs.

    25. another thing that people forget is that a cypher isn’t a rap battle, its just your opportunity to rhyme and show your skills, but its not a battle rap or battle circle

    26. I said that the day I heard the Cypher. Anyway I ain’t callin’ that nigga Mos Def Yasiin Def, no disrespect, but I ain’t wit all that bullshit.

    27. Eminem raped this I have no idea what dude is talkin about. Clearly the most talented rapper there

    28. Remix, rising up out of the flames like a phoenix
Straining to carry the weight of my brain like a genius
Knowing I’m sowing seeds, let’s see whose thumb is the greenest

Eat, sleep it or bleed it, write it down and then read it
Asphalt to the cement, your trash talk, deleted
I blast off then lay ’em out like a Tempurpedic
It’s Black Thought, for certain I’mma win eventually
      This unsung, underrated, under-appreciated
The one them underachievers had underestimated
Finally graduated from one of the most hated
To something that’s so sacred, nobody goin’ take it
Face it, I keep doin’ it well
Doin’ it sans assistance, just do it yourself
Doin’ it below the radar, we doin’ it stealth
Doin’ it again for Illadelph, yo, who else?
      We goin’ do it again!

Ayo I’m on my job, see my eAnnotateyes focused where the prize be

      I’s a changed man, ain’t no again’s or probably’s
Niggas used to know me, they don’t even recognise me
Yep, the P-5-D is who the repertoire be

I’m like Martin Luther King, you like Rodney
The difference is I give it everything inside me
Dear diary, the fans still swear by me
Even though I’m Late Night now like “Here’s Johnny”
Swimming with them Great Whites now, that’s where to find me
Funny how it break right down, but never mind me
Forever grimey, I guess it’s just Philly shining
Rock roller, bi-polar like Phyllis Hyman

put that up against what Em and Yasiin spit. I don’t care if it’s a verse off a song (doin it again, off things fall apart)

      1. Premo knows what he’s talking about. Black Thought is one of the most slept on in the history of Hip Hop.

    29. Great freestyle session. Not a fan of Eminem or his music but vato can freestyle his ass off eh!

    30. Eminem dropped a nuclear bomb in that first cypher, and I’m not an Em stan like that. BT is sick but Preemo’s out of his damn mind. I thought Royce did the best in the 2nd one…

    31. You black thought fans are dellusional if you think he can beat eminem in a freestyle battle. Those verses were written off the dome eminem would destroy all of them fact!

      1. having an opinion about an artist is one thing but dickriding another man’s dick like that is something else.. i hope for your own sake you’re a female fan…

    32. BT was 3rd best imo… #1 was close between Mos Def and Marshall but I’ll go with Em because he made me laugh.

You know who really won tho? The fans… that shit was amazing.

    33. ive been a huge fan of eminem since i was a kid but black though is one of the most under rated artists ever

    34. WHY HE GOTTA HATE ON BEEBZ THO?? THERE’S MAD REAL RAPPERS THAT DON’T WRITE THEY RAPS AND U GONNA HATE ON THE TEEN POP HEARTROB???

WHOEVER WRITES FOR BEEBZ SHOULDA WROTE FOR GURU CUZ THAT NIGGA WAS WACK!!

      1. WAIT A MINUTE WHICH GURU YOU TALKING ABOUT?GURU FROM GANG STARR?GIFTED UNLIMITED RHYMES UNIVERSAL?GURU WAS WACK?AHHAHAHA OBVIOUSLY WHO DONT GOT THE SLIGHTEST FUCKING IDEA WHAT A GOOD MC SOUNDS LIKE..GURU COULD FUCK YOU UP WITH HIS THOUGHT PROVOKING LYRICS…PEOPLE LIKE YOU SHOULDNT SPEAK BECAUSE YOURE OPINION DOESNT EVEN COUNT…RIP GURU!FUCK ALL THESE HATERS!…YOU GOTTA BE A DUMB MOTHERFUCKER TO SAY GURU WAS WACK..AND ITS NOT JUST MY OPINION THAT HE WAS DOPE…ITS A FACT BITCH ASS BLACK!

    35. That is what MCs do when they step into a cypher. Rappers are just wack & boring these days, easily saying nothing. Dope, All three did their thing. #HipHop #Lyricism

    36. honestly i think Em had the best verse even through the crowd reactions it aint hard to tell.

but seriously i think one thing every hip-hop fan has been asking for for years is a Black Thought solo LP and i am so glad it’s finally happening. For a minute i thought it would never happen. Hopefully we get some Primo beats on there too.

    37. Black Thought can rhyme, but no way he bodied Eminem there. It took him a minute to catch fire, but when he did he shit on both BL and Mos Def.

    38. so many Eminem fan boys gettin mad. this is one mans opinion. all three of them did their thing.

      1. other people’s opinion don’t match the eminem army, stop trying to imply your opinion on them

    39. idk man it’s all about what you look for. in cyphers like this, i personally look for crazy rhyme schemes and funny/memorable punch lines. to me, em had that over black thought

    40. typical hiphopdx, twisting people words and misquoting people, he didnt say that. he said black thought bodied the his part. not the others rappers. this site is ran by investigatory scum bags and shit heads

      1. ITS ALWAYS BEEN…ITS JUST THAT BLACK AND WHITE HAVE BEEN BLINDED THAT IT WAS BLACK VS WHITE…THE HIGHER FORCES DONT WANT BLACK AND WHITE GET TOGETHER CAUSE THEN WE UNSTOPABBLE

    41. Eminem Kilt that shit!! All of em did, but I definitely don’t think Black Thought bodied anyone even tho thats not what DJ premier said!

    42. He bodied Em & Yasin Bey by rocking a written both written verses from The Roots “Doin’ it Again” w/ John Legend…YEAH OK

    43. Anyone riding with that Em verse is a dickriding nerd. Killing Koalas and mauling chihuahua’s?! Dopamine, barbituates…get off the pill rapping. Black Thought killed them.

      1. Atleast Eminem came with his own freestyle shit, Black thought took that verse from the roots album 2.0, Fallback
        Shady got that one

      2. THANKS. BEEN TELLING FOLKS FOR YEARS THAT EM’S IS HIGHLY OVERRATED. THE GUY IS SUPER TECHNICAL. BUT NO OTHER RAPPER WOULD GET CREDIT FOR SOME OF THE B.S HE RAPS. I.E TALIB OR BLACK THOUGHT.

    44. by premo saying dis hiphopdx will misquote and make it look like black thought bodied em and mos..which is not…most of what BT was spitting was written and you can find it in his songs..go do ur research..Em was the best hands down..em lines was dope..everybody remembers his dope lines..just check out the crown reactions when em was spitting……em is the king of BET CYPHERS.

      1. dude Blackthought is one of my favorites ever. But that wasn’t freesyle it was written.. FACT.. google the lyrics.

    45. to that tech n9ne comment eariler about him being the best lyricist guess what?? tech himself said eminem is the best lyrcist in the game and he even mentions and puts him above chino xl, crooked i and a few others. I know ppl are gonna be jealously bitching so heres the proof:

      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PZwGQ63vK7c

*And this was last year in 2012…AFTER his “wack new” albums…..

      1. lol no i like them both and tech is good for being humble but in terms of metaphors, similes, wordplay and even sylables, tech is better than eminem, probably the best at this current time. You can look at it from dissecting styles of the artists or opinion and i look at it both ways

      2. Sayin tech is better in SYLLABLES AND WORDPLAY!?!?!? Nigga are you fuckin stupid?? Those are eminems signature and strongest categories and tech HIMSELF even mentions ems wordplay did you even click the link he provided?

    46. Well em certainly ain’t the best rapper alive because he is white

Do some real research and get up to standards!

    47. Tech doesn’t know how make “real” songs, or radio friendly songs like Eminem does. Therefore, he can’t be better. Plus his sales are shit.

    48. Stop twisting the dudes words, I support this website because you support some real talent that others don’t while also showing us the mainstream artists..

    49. dx played you stans, just like they do every april fool’s with the eminem track. you’re too goofy to realize it.

    50. Premier…you’re the greatest producer on the planet but I gotta disagree with you on this. Eminem takes it. Hands down.

    51. Don’t kno if he bodied them, but I feel you really can’t tell by the crowd’s reaction. Em gets superstar reaction bc of all the records he sells, even when the bars are just ok. His verse was dope, but if it was MGK or Yelawolf spitting those verses the ooohs and ahhhs wouldnt have been so dramatic.

    52. Kill that, Black THought Got that verse from his ALbum
IM sure eminem actually freestyled that or wrote that for the video real quick like

    53. Just listened to this shit again and eminem definitely slaughtered this shit does premo even know that black thought used a recycled verse from a song? Even dre dont like em as much as yall think and he would say his protege killed the shit

      1. I don’t think that you know what a “cypher” actually is – I don’t know why people think it, and a “freestyle”, is meant to be necessarily off the top.

      1. YEAH, WHAT WOULD DRAKE DO WITH A PREME RECORD SON? SOME R&B/TECHNO MUSIC. KEEP THE PREME TRACKS FOR THE STREET GUYS.

    54. Yeah this was forever ago. Tariq’s verse is from “Doin It Again” and Mighty Mos’s was from his “Brooklyn (We Go Hard)” remix. I don’t know about Em’s bc I don’t listen to him as much. They were all dope (of course). Any body below who’s hating on Black Thought… nothing needs to be said, you can’t argue with people like that

      1. This video came out way before the song came out. I’m sure he just had the verse written and then when the album came around he threw it on a track.

    56. Who cares about this one cypher? I feel like E40 shit on all of them on the west coast 2012 BET cypher. Like Droop E said back in 1995 on 40’s record, “Game, straight game, get up on it! straight game!”

    57. If you only judged the verses, Black Thought had the best.

BUT you have to take in to the fact that Black Thought already spit that verse on the song “Doin It Again” and Mos Def’s verse comes from “Brooklyn We Go Hard (Remix”). 58. We’ll what premo did was give his opinion. Premo is more official than anyone who who may comment on what was said. I happen to agree with him and while I think all three were dope I would rank em 3rd on that. People keep saying the verse was recycled but who care’s it was still dope and that was the question, who had the best verse.

      1. Serious problem with this here. Black Thought was NOT spitting off his dome. Black Thought used a song that he had in his album. He had been working on this song already. He had been working on the album which took 8 more months or a full year later for the album to be ready for the public or to be published.

People ignore or many forget that an artist may have the songs ready , and an album being in the works, and the whole production can take a long time before it is released.
The bars from Black Thought in this cypher was from the song in the album — How I Got Over

The album came out a year later, but the album was already in the works

    59. lol now that cypher looks like the 3 rappers the mainstream white public recognizes. not to take a away from it, cause its ill by hip hop standards as well.

    60. Everybody keeps saying that Black Thought used a recycled verse….the Cypher happened in 2009….the album from How I Got Over was released in late 2010. When he spit that verse, the song didn’t exist to everybody yet. When he did in 2009…nobody heard that verse before…Mos recycled a verse from a song released earlier so that is valid…but Thought not so much…and he did win it in my eyes. Em might have had the best line…but Thought had the best verse bar for bar…

      1. yeah i’ve noticed a lot of videos of cyphers/freestyles are reused verses to be honest. BET, even old ones from the 90s like that one w busta and odb

      2. People (Stans) also forget the most freestyles Eminem did in the 96-98 era he used for his Slim Shady LP songs. Often rappers do that, but they probably started to listen after they heard Love The Way You Lie….

      3. Serious problem with this here. Black Thought was NOT spitting off his dome. Black Thought used a song that he had in his album. He had been working on this song already. The album came out a year later, but the album was already in the works

      4. UGK, that comment is irrelevant to the specific discussion of WHO WAS BETTER IN THIS CYPHER. Eminem was THE ONLY ONE doing this off his dome. Eminem was NOT rapping a song from one of his albums, either album in the works or album already published.

    61. Everyone said Black Thought bodied the cypher, but both Mos Def and Eminem freestyled. Black Thought spit a whole entire verse off one of his own recorded albums. How does that count?

      1. He wrote it. By the time an emcee is 15 20 years in its no longer free styling in the ways most people think of it — straight off the dome. As a software engineer, I think it’s more like object oriented programming. You have re-usable polymorphic constructs …, not bars, but metaphors, similes, rhyme schemes that are created, catalogued and organized in the mind, selectable and modifiable on demand based on context, beat, rhyme scheme. This is the talent of these elite emcees. It’s alchemy, more science than art. It’s genius. And it is what makes me a fan (at 58 years old) of REAL hip-hop.
