DJ Premier On Kanye’s New Album: ‘Strictly Hard Beats And Rhymes’

In a recent interview with The Red Bulletin, legendary Hip Hop producer DJ Premier spoke briefly on Kanye’s career, as well as his highly-anticipated fifth album.

Preme noted how Kanye’s emphasis on sampling brought the production technique back to the forefront at a time when synth-laden soundscapes were the norm. “Well, first of all, if you look at all of Kanye West’s output, he actually did a lot to bring back sampling and make it cool again, even though he’s more of a mainstream artist.”

Premier also provided insight on Ye’s new album, revealing that the Chicago producer/emcee would be taking a back-to-basics approach – presumably typical of his debut, College Dropout. “his new album is strictly hard beats and rhymes. He’s totally done with electro. You’re gonna be surprised what you hear.”

This fuels already rampant speculation regarding Kanye’s project, thought to be titled Good Ass Job, as it was reported recently that Q-Tip, RZA and Pete Rock might all be contributors to the project.

    4. If there is a man I trust with his hip hop opinions, it would be no other than Premo. I skipped out on 808s and Heartbreaks, so I predict that I’m going to buy another Kanye album this June.

    5. with all the rumors out there, qtip premo rza this gotta be of the hook. Nas was on hawai at the same time rza and kanye were there… hopefully he lays a verse

    7. Kanye is one of the best producers of the 00’s but I never thought he was good as a rapper except for a few outstanding verses. I’m glad to hear this because Kanye was getting very gay, and all that “Loui Vutton Don” shit was always wack to me. Back to the basics is always a good approach.

      1. cosign. I like Kanye on the boards much more than on the mic. maybe this album will be more up my alley tho

      2. Ya crazy. Besides The Game, Kanye has made better albums than Weezy, TI, Jeezy and Ross. 808’s shit was trash, but Late Registration & Graduation is the best out of all these new niggaz shit ya consider hot albums. Kanye has 3 classics under his belt as far as Im concerned.

      3. Co-sign with the tite jeans bullshit. he has a verse where he says everybody dresses tight now and he just want his credit. HEY!!!

listen to N.A.S.A. – Gifted featuring Santogold

      4. @INOA so The Game and Kanye are the only ones who have made better albums than Weezy, TI, Jeezy and Ross? LOL if you even think thsoe artists make great albums, and LOL if you think no one is making better albums.

      5. Eh, I don’t really feel Kanye as a rapper…he is a producer first, and he should really hone his skills on that (oh he CAN get better)…on Common’s “Be” album, the track “The Game”, I thought it was Premo (who was actually scratching), but Kanye did the beat which SOUNDED like Premo… Some might disagree and say he’s nice like that, that’s cool, that’s your opinion…

    8. shout out 2 Mcdonald’s by Macon State College the owners are getting 2 the money and wanted me 2 tell the rest of u owners ya ass gon get bought out, cuz she is making the most money she has ever made in her life by listening 2 1 suggestion from me.

    9. Way to wake up Kanye and stop the whole 808’s crap. Let’s cross our fingers for a CRS reunion. Death to the Pastels and Louie V and rebirth to the Jesus Piece and College hoodie.

    10. Its god to see him going back to the basics, often times when artist get to their 3rd, 4th album they seem to get further away from hiphop and develope a more commercial sound, College Dropout was his best work, you can feel the hunger, and his need to establish himself, the beats were incredible

    11. That’s what Kanye needs. Unless you’re the Black Eyed Peas, that electro/pop stuff won’t work in the traditional hip hop realm. Kanye still had ties to the traditional hip hop world so when he went to Mars or wherever he went, the hip hop heads were like “dude is on some next shit.” He needs a return of the boom bap. The hip hop world has been doubting Kanye for some time. This is his chance to prove himself again.

      1. Kanye goes back to hip-hop, sampling, loops, breakbeats, while others (50) want to go techno. kanye is head of his class. for sure! many doubt him but his work ethic is solid

    13. Am I the only one who thinks Kanye “spitting hard rhymes” sounds like the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard? You can’t throw hissy fits publicly and be hard at the same time. When he stops acting like a bitch I’ll stop thinking of him like a bitch. Until then, a hard beat from Preme or RZA is a waste of a beat.

    14. Wow am I the only one who liked 808’s. Go figure. A live album of that would be dope! Anyways its funny how people think Ye is totally pop since 808’s. It was only one album folks!!!!! I bet even before 808’s he had the album after that he would switch it back to the days of College Dropout. Just so he would shut everybody up who thinks he’s gone to pop.

    15. Niggaz hatin’ on growth…Im all for this new album but y’all trippin’ if you think Graduation wasn’t hot. Good mix of his first two albums and it killed 50 lol

    16. Im hyped for this new album but y’all niggas hatin’ growth and ish….Graduation was on point with some big, epic jams. Good mix of his first two albums and it helped accelerate the death of 50 as a rap artist as well. Now all those hatas wanna forget. Ima take a Kanye album anyday since its always got something to keep you checking for better or worst…and mostly its better. College Dropout was dope, but it came off a bit like a mixtape to me. Late Reg. was too overblown…though We Major was sick and other songs too. Graduation is all heaters except Drunken Hot Girls

    17. Kanye is Better than Jay Z check the fucking books! And you’ll be shooked!
Taylor Swift buyin the first 100,000, of this good shit!
      * I bought my whole family whips no volvos! Next time am in church plz no photos*

    18. i skipped 808s and heartbreaks coz that shit was pop and ass.But if he is gonna collaborate with souljahboy, then i can’t call that going back to the basics………..if he will really collaborate with pete rock, q-tip, then he will really be going back to the basics and i will cop this shit

    19. looking forward to Kanye’s, Nas and Damian Marley, and the Game’s albums to drop this summer…gonna be a good yr for hip hop

    20. fuckin right, i was gettin sick and tired of kanye’s electro/emo rap phase. itll be good to hear some more dope hip hop tracks from kanye.

    21. premo, pete rock, rza… don’t normally check for kanye’s shit but this looks like it could be fire

    22. I think Kanye has been going old school with his Hip Hop beats(Brooklyn, Hate, Jockin’ Jay, Thank You). Thos beats sound very 80’s and no not 80’s Pop but 80’s Hip Hop. I think if people were more into 80’s rap and Indie music they would appreciate The Blueprint 3 more. I think it’s a modern day classic and I’m hoping Kanye’s next album will be a modern day Illmatic—This is not old school Kanye but old school Hip Hop.

Also I have to note that Kanye can do Premier style beats just check out the song he did for Diddy called “Everything I Love” on Press Play. It doesn’t have scratching but to me it sounds like a Premier beat mixed with Kanye so just imagine those two together. Also did a song on one of Common’s albums that sound very much like DJ Premier.
