Diddy Says Hip Hop’s Gotten “Too Soft”

While opinions on Kendrick Lamar’s “Control” verse may be varied, Hip Hop entrepreneur Sean “Diddy” Combs says the Compton emcee’s verse was a “bold” move he loved every minute of.

During an interview with Big Boy’s Neighborhood, Diddy, who initially expressed his excitement regarding Kendrick’s verse via Twitter, revealed that he wasn’t all too impressed with the hurriedness of some of the lyrical responses to “Control.”

“With the ‘king of New York’ line, I mean, it turned me up,” said Diddy. “You know what I’m saying? I was just like, ‘Woah, yo. This cat is bold, man.’ And I was like, ‘I love every minute of it.’ You know, I Tweeted that I loved every minute of it. I was like ‘Yo, what are y’all cats gonna do now?’ A lot of y’all don’t take your time. Even if I get some of my rhymes co-written, I’m at least taking my time on what I’m saying. Certain cats, they don’t even take they time on what they saying. They’re not really into the details and into the importance of it. And I just think he put the game in perspective and he ignited a fire in the game that was needed.”

Diddy further commented on today’s Hip Hop as he referred to the genre as being “too soft” in regards to the quality of work being put out.

“That boldness is what Hip Hop is about,” said the Forbes Cash King. “Hip Hop done got a little bit too soft. You know what I’m saying? And it’s not even about beef. It’s about the quality of work. Some of the quality of work is just not up to par.”

The Bad Boy Records founder was one of many artists present at last month’s taping of the BET Hip Hop Awards, which aired on October 15. During French Montana’s “Ain’t Worried About Nothin” performance, the rapper placed a crown on Diddy’s head in a gesture that seemed to acknowledge Kendrick’s “king of New York” mention on “Control.”

Diddy addressed his crowning and went on to state that Kendrick was also worthy of his crown thanks to his ability to put Hip Hop on its back.

“For me, it was just a regular day,” said Diddy, when asked about being crowned. “Because I am a king and I feel that there’s a king in all of us. People use the word ‘king’ too loosely and too lightly. And you have to be ready to be a king. You have to be ready for that responsibility. I’ve earned my crown…You have to be a prince sometimes before you can be a king. And I think that Kendrick is deserving of his crown cause he took Hip Hop and put it on its back so crazy. And is giving birth to just a whole type of real Hip Hop generation…He went back to the essence of what Hip Hop was about. Us challenging us to be the greatest.”

In addition to calling out his fellow emcees on “Control,” Kendrick caused a minor uproar after stating that he was the “king of New York” as he rapped, “I’m Makaveli’s offspring, I’m the king of New York / King of the Coast, one hand, I juggle them both.”

In an Instagram post, which followed the release of “Control,” Diddy appeared to poke fun of Kendrick’s “king of New York” mention, but also added this caption to his image: “Kendrick got y’all niggas takin y’all time now! This is good ! What y’all gonna do now? Haaaaa lol lets go!”

      1. as much as I want that. Ain’t happening. Those raps days ARE LONG GONE. Ever since the south ‘took over’ in 05/06 they brought that ‘simple’ rap NOW LOOK [H-Town was okay but you A-Town fools let them clowns in with ya (Shake that Laffy Taffy lmao)]

    1. im glad diddy mentioned the co writer bec i was about to rip him lol makes him opinion lil more meaningful from an artist perspective but hes 1000 percent right. kendricks brining it back eminems gonna put a stamp on it.

i wish he would of just said MCHG and YEEZUS were complete disappointments when he said not up 2 par..which is obv what diddy was refering to..if anything def MCHG bec its a ‘new york’ album

      1. So you telling me because he getting older and don’t want to rap about the same shit he soft now? The nigga is getting older he can’t keep rapping about the trap house and killing niggas when he 45. That’s the problem with so called fans of Hip Hop, noone can grow up which is why Hip Hop is so fucked up now…

      2. Tip isn’t as much about that life now as he claims to be, but that’s cause he got that money now

only niggas who are hardcore by definition are fiendin in the streets.

    2. I just don’t understand what he’s referring to…literally everything that’s “wrong” with rap from a purely hip-hop head’s perspective Diddy has either co-signed or helped along. Everyone wants to bring up how much the game needs to change, and then does a song with French Montana & 2 Chainz. Not that I don’t mind their music from time to time, it just seems pretty hypocritical that all these cats wanna bitch about hip-hop, and then continue to promote what they were bitching about in the first place.

    3. ol making the band ass ninja wanna talk about shit being too soft

aint this the same guy who signed machine gun kelly?

    4. Misleading title!

The people who frequent this website are not intelligent enough to understand Diddys quote, they will simply take the title and run with it.

Sure HipHop got soft but why wouldn’t it get soft when the best selling HipHop artist is dressing up as a woman in his videos and beefing with PoP stars as a gimmick?

On the flip side yeah the lyrical sparring and competitive beefing on wax got played out because we lost two giants and had a coastal conflict, after that we suffered the sickness of the G-Unit era where beef on wax became black-balling, skits, photoshop, cartoons and trying to end careers instead of simple diss records.

Hopefully we are in an era where artists can respectfully compete without name-dropping and beefing in the streets like animals.

      1. Props on the proofread I always forget to advertise my Twitter, I’m trying to get to a thousand followers by November! I don’t mind you helping me but I ain’t paying you.

Stop flirting about my fingers, babygirl, what’s your Twitter?

        @BruthaDee

      2. sorry you’re not my type.

not into unemployed middle aged black dudes who take selfies in their cars with long ass fingernails

    5. hhdx staff are the biggest trolls on this site, just look at the article pics they put up. u know they trollin

    6. Smoking Gun just did a story on Jimmy ‘Henchman’ Rosemond and apparently the feds were asking Jimmy questions about Diddy diddling underage boys!!!!!

      1. thats some creepy shit!!!!! they must have heard something to be asking about diddy having sexual relations with lil boys

    7. Fuck puffy know bout whats soft n whats street hiding behind 20 bodyguards.

Member when it got real in the club what u do puffy hire diff lawyers n get ur man shyne sent down for a decade niggaz a piece of shit

    8. Kendrick is only getting better too. I honestly thought GKMC was hella overrated until he spit that Control verse.

    9. So if it’s because the game has gotten soft, why did you catch feelings and go at K.dot?? Diddy is just as bi-polar as Game. You hype it, start crying and then hype it again. Diddy that kind of cat that throws his mike hard lemonade at you, and then runs to the bathroom to grab a towel to come dry you off..talking about “my bad dude.”

      1. Smh…he means the Game as in hip-hop…not as in the rapper…I swear to God you niggas need to take some night classes or something

    10. Diddy been making poppy, soft “hip hop,” since the 90’s and he has the nerve to say hip hop is soft now? This nigga pickled his brain on ciroc…

    11. Tell us something we don’t know. I think we knew hip hop was soft when all they talk about is molly, fuckin’ hoes, and partying, and fuckin’ with niggaz. Everyone talks the same subject and beats start to sound the same. You got a few that are good and keep it real but the rest are just followers. You don’t have to be a rap mogul to figure out hip hop is shit right now.

    12. If even Diddy is saying hip hop is too soft then it’s time to start worrying.

But Diddy, ain’t your Last-train-to-paris-ass part of the problem???

    13. On another note I think it’s really sad how all these rappers and whatnot are on Kendricks nuts because of one average verse, nothing speial was said in that verse and it tells about the wack status of the game more than anything that it’s even talked about. Kendrick is a Ok rapper but not God, chill the fuck out, it’s not rocket science.

    14. Lol this is the guy that promoted Ma$e back in the day doing tunes like ‘Welcome Back’. And talks about quality whilst supporting French Montana… I rest my case.

    15. fuck him and his rich ass opinion on hip hop. Dude needs to get his shiny suits out to stay relevant. Whitest black dude.

      1. The only great hip hop artist on Bad Boy was Biggie, everyone else was meh…… yea, he mad money, but who cares if his music isn’t good (or eye for talent for that matter)

    16. Yea Diddy lets talk about being soft. You are the same nigga that showed up to a concert wearing a kilt. Diddy, you’re not Irish so why you wearing a dress.

      1. Drake is an international superstar. Why would Diddy indirectly call him out for being soft? He wishes he was making money off him.

      2. How does Drake’s dick taste? That nigga ain’t an international superstar and Diddy don’t need him; Diddy’s worth half a billion.

    17. Hip-hop is not TOO SOFT- yawl just for some strange reason think you can only listen to one rapper at a time.

Not all of us are into Pusha T’s brand of hip-hop. Not all of us are into Drakes brand or Jay’s brand or Eminem etc. But A LOT of us are into ALL brands of not just hip-hop but MUSIC in general.

    18. I agree 200% with Diddy. The game has changed so much that its in need of individuals like K.DOT to shake things up a bit. Where is the edge? where is the originality? Its alot of copy and paste MCs in the industry but they fail to see, that they wont be here long. People my have there opinion about Diddy but the dude has a point. I found this tour for unsigned Independent artist. I aint ever seen this before. This might be what the game needs #thehiphopbreak.com

    19. But wait..why did Diddy attempt to pour a drink on Kendrick at the party? And then Cole had to step in to save his ass. Fucking clown interviewers couldn’t even ask him about that incident..

    20. You fuck faces allways complaign about rappers being fake and soft when you finally got a nigga qho is about that life who is as real as a real nigga can get you still hate on him. FREE THE EMPEROR OF REAL NIGGAS FREE GUWOP,

GUCCI MANE is the realest rapper and heres why.
      1) all other rappers rap about being gangster shooting and killing but they havent done it.
      2) Eminem raps about killing he hasnt.
3)Jay z raps in open letter about sending shots he hasnt.
4)Nas raps about how he is a queens thug but he wasn’t.
5)Most of the rappers rap about stuff they havent done yet you all support them and say its real rap.
6)When rick ross does it you all claim he is fake and say its fake rap.

This shows that hiphop fans are hypocritical and all these real hiphop fan wanna be’s are just some unjustified haters whose opinions are just as irrelevent as the swag fag rapper fans.

GUCCI MANE KILLED A MAN HE WAS A DRUG DEALER BEFORE RAPPER HE HAS STREET CREDENTIALS HE IS THE ONLY RAPPER THAT RAPS ABOUT FACTS THERE FORE BIG GUWOP IS THE REALEST RAPPER IN THE RAP GAME AND THATS A FACT!

      1. @Slim Dunkin Ghost Gucci taught that nigga Flocka how to rap. Gucci is way better than Flock’s yellin ass.

    21. I couldn’t agree with Diddy more. This is due partially to the microwave society that we live in. So many rappers were and are ready to dismiss Kendrick’s claim. Yet, they totally missed what he was saying. Lyrically a lot of rappers are not ready to see Kendrick.

    22. I’ve been tellin bitches on this site for ages now, how soft hip hop is because of these ymcmb punks. Hip hop was dead and ymcmb took the crown coz no one else was in it! Now kendrick is bringin the shit back to life. Watch the pussy niggas like drake slowly decline and fade away… mark my words nukkas!!

      1. That’s called business, moron. Ross is a superstar, and Montana is still signed to Diddy who needs to recoup his investment.

    23. Diddy, said some then and I totally agree with him on that. Speaking of hiphop being soft, Have any of you individuals heard about The hip hop break?? They got a nation wide tour in U.S. for unsigned artist.
      Just google thehiphopbreak

    24. THIS IS THE SAME NIGGA WHO SIGNED FRENCH MONTANA, RIGHT???

………..HA!!!! SHUT THE FUCK UP NIGGA!!!!

      DON’T HATE ON MY OPINION!!!!

      1. Boredom??? So intelligent lines/bars over hot samples chopped up are boring to you? Spoken like a true peanut brain! You special Ed students are entertained by the dumbest shit and hate on witty/thought provoking music. SMFH!

    25. Says the man in the shinny suite! FOH! He’s one of the main reasons Hip Hop has gone soft! I guess he forgot about Mase and not to mention his last album, ‘Last Train to Paris’ …. Now he’s pushing one of the worst artist (French Montana) who makes music for snails and he wants to say the game is soft… LMAO.

    26. ntro – Dope but dramatic

Victory – 5 MICS (Started the album off with a Classic)

Been Around The World – 5 MICS (Big, Ma$e and Diddy on another Classic song)

What You Gonna Do 4 MICS (A dope storytelling song, sounded like something Biggie or Black Rob would spit a story over)

Don’t You Stop What You Doing – 3.5 MICS (Decent record, Lil Kim and Faith come through but it’s only OK)

If I should die Tonight (Interlude) – Carl Thomas made the track

Do You Know – 4 MICS (Beat was fire, Puffy came through too. Kelly Price voice is so underrated and amazing)

Young G’s – 5 MICS (Big, Jay and Puff with Kelly killing the hook with a hard beat)

I Love You Baby – 5 MICS (Black Rob and Puff drop an amazing storytelling)

All About The Benji’s -5 MICS (Is there any debate that this isn’t one of the greatest rap songs of all time? Classic)

Pain – 5 MICS (Deep song)

Is This The End – 5 MICS (This joint has a little timbaland style with
the double time beat but it’s dope and Twist Diddy and Ginuwine kill it)

I Got The Power – 4 MICS (Lox drove the track, beat was cool too)

Friend – 3.5 MICS (One of the weaker joints on the album. Foxy was OK but the song is only alright. Beat was straight)

Senorita – 4 MICS (This was a guilty pleasure of mines. I would of liked it better if Ma$e had a verse over this)

I’ll Be Missing You – 5 MICS (One of Hip Hop Biggest songs ever and Eulogized one of the greatest rappers ever)

Can’t Nobody Hold Me Down – 5 MICS (Classic Beat that was flipped for modern audiences but Ma$e and Puff Killed it)

      MIC AVERAGE: 4.53

Yes the album is Classic and it’s not Low Key. The purist hated Puff
but the reality was he was dropping Classic and Quality songs and music.
It’s funny that “No Way Out” stands up with a lot of albums released
today. Sure there was a lot of hit songs on it that blew the album up.
But the album is very solid. The guest features enhance the album.
There’s honestly only a few weak joints, the rest is fire. But it’s now
a Low Key Classic. The album sold Over Diamond worldwide. The singles
sold over Diamond worldwide. He had 2 #1 (Missing You, Can’t Nobody) hits, 2 #2 Hits (Benji’s and Been around the world) and a Top 20 hit (Victory). That’s 5 hit singles.

Puffy could of very well had 4 #1
hits on this album if “Missing You” and “Life After Death” was
smashing sh!t. Now the biggest rock you can throw at the album was
Puffy’s performance. Yes he had some really good ghostwriters. But
sometimes his flow was a little off. You could tell he was basically
still learning how to rap. But the production, guest features and
quality songs make up for that. “No Way Out” is a Legendary album in
Hip Hop for it’s success and for better or worst making the CEO/Rapper
trend. It’s been 16 years and Puffy hasn’t made anything near as
      Classic as this album.

    27. The whole, city is mine, prettiest Don
I don’t like the way P. Diddy did Shyne with different lawyers
Why it’s mentioned in my rhymes? Fuck it, it’s just an intro
Hate it or love it, like it bump it or dump it
Writing, across the stomach spell God son

      1. True. He’s a talent evaluator and comes from an era that lyrics matter back then. Nobody takes Diddy seriously as a rapper or lyricist at all. He’s referring to those who actually are called rappers and putting out music.

    28. Says the muthafucka who released an album named”Last train to Paris” with electro beats and takes dick in his ass on a daily basis..Diddy is a clown

    29. Says the guy who sang “Last night I couldn’t even get an answerrrrr” and simped his ass all over r&b beats his whole career

    30. I fuck with Diddy as an independent black entrepreneur, but this nigga has no business talking about the game becoming “too soft”. NIGGA, YOU’RE ONE OF THE REASONS IT HAS GOTEN SOFT!

    31. LIKE DIDDY stated what you guys going say now, he made you guys take your time…meaning ppl have to go back to basics and think about the rhymes they be putting out!! not just put senseless shit together, raps that acually mean SENSE… JUst like YOU SENSELESS PPL dissing DIDDY as an ARTIST? THE dude just said “take your time” and you clowns here dissing him as an ARTIST?

      Let me break it down….

1.Did anyone ever state as an artist Diddy is there fav. mc or co sign him?
      2. DId diddy every say he a great mc?
      3. Everyone knows even diddy states he dont write his own rhymes
      4. Did any artist state diddy a good rapper?
      5. diddy evn stated he not a rapper back in the days

Dude raps and sings for fun on albums to get paid CAUSE HE CAN..and he rarely does that he does it for fun! and EVERYONE except for YOU morons going at him as an artist cuase he talking about artist who claim to be actual rappers and STATE that there a RAPPER do this thing on a serious level.

wack flaka states he not a rapper and he came up in the game due to the fact ppl just LIKE beats!! and dont really care about lyrics why i guy can come out and talk shit on records with a nice beat and make money..but gues what i’m pretty sure he put his shit on pause now and thinking twice about putting just anything out there ALL THESE DUDES ARE PUTTING OUT BARS!!! dont you see a trend KENDRICK has started. eg. all the shit ppl are peeping now are shit w/ ppl spitting bars in there song or track no “simple simon” stuff or nurshery rhyme music

    32. Diddy quote “A lot of yall dont take your time. Even if I get some of my rhymes co-written,”

By some I guess he means all, Diddy has never put pen to paper unless he was signing a cheque.

      1. Hip Hop’s gotten almost as soft as he is…

Let’s see, the LOX too. Mase was allright. Black Rob for a second. And he made those niggaz get cheesecake. But putting BIG on was enough.

    33. Hip hop is more than just rap and Diddy never claimed to be Biggie. The “hip hop” community can be the most ignorant by most of these comments I see from Diddy to dissing Rick Ross about he a CO at the age of 19! I don’t care if Ross was a CO yesterday!

    34. I’m a big K.dot fan, but I wouldn’t give him sole credit of re-igniting hip hop. His two albums are great in my opinion, but I have to also give credit to Pusha T and J.Cole as well

    35. Music Justice will take over hip hop and eliminate this wack artist claiming to be hip hop AZ bring hip hop to where it belongs Kendrick is alright no offence to the dude but Music Justic will take over hip hop and nobody will challenge him of fuck with him alright

    36. We got in stock Actavis promethazine w/codeine purple cough syrup,Roxi 30 blues,OC 80’s,OG kush,strawberry,Fast delivery,Discreet Packaging.email us (stev02chem@gmail.com) or Text us at (781)667-4915

    37. Diddy makes nothing but soft music!

People like Drake on the other hand are innovative and are actually pushing hip-hop’s boundaries.

    38. so if he is talking about hip hop lacking the quality of work…THEN WHY THE FUCK HE SIGN FRENCH MONATANA?…..get the fuck out of here with that bull shit diddy.

    39. he aint shit in modern day hip-hop

      but he right

be need a real g capable of being lyrical like old eminem ,dre,xzibit,d12, even g-unit better than half the new acts

      flatbush brooklyn doing it tho

    40. its all about the art of 16 bars

classic beats and bars that give off a certain feeling, that feeling is called essence

      krs one not nelly

    41. Diddy has played a major role in the “soft music” over the years. This is a hypocrite statement…I would compare this to a drug dealer saying that the reason our community is messed up is becasue of drugs.

    42. Hip Hop done got a little bit too soft. You know what Im saying? And its not even about beef. Its about the quality of work. Some of the quality of work is just not up to par.

      eminems fault
      kanyes fault
      drake fault
      lil waynes fault
      b.o.b and t.i. fault
      wale fault
      j.cole fault
      kendrick fault

    43. Amateuristic martial arts is the number one cause of injury
Biters try to emulate my alchemy, get poisoned by the chemistry
99.9 percent of these niggas suck dick in the industry
Swords in my back, all for the benjies

Plus I can take the weight, I make the Earth rotate

But don’t get caught, the same nigga’ll testify
      Switch like a bitch
You not from East New York, you’s a motherfucking snitch

99.9 Pa Cent of these niggas ain’t shit
And most of these niggas suck dick

    44. Okay so this guy says that Hip Hop is too ‘soft’. Why doesn’t he sign artists that will contribute more to hip hop than having these trap artists with the same concept in each of their songs. This guy is more than capable of doing such, signing great hip hop artists to his label and getting hip hop back on track. You can’t just sit there and complain, stand up and do something. Then again he is chasing a billion so he doesn’t care. Doesn’t surprise me.

    45. were talking about a man with the money to launch several lyrical rappers himself(like kanye and dre have), but instead has only supported trash rappers like French Montana and soft RndB. Hes done nothing for hip hop since Biggie left, and we needed him more than ever. Step up your game diddy.

    46. have we ever had more embarrassing set of niggas in the culture than right now with Lil Wayne, Drake and all of Young Money, Officer Ricky and MMG ,DJ Khaled and then everyone on his album

      1. Why are you mentioning MMG & Khaled when you constantly remind us that they are not million selling artistists?

Emenim is the biggest artist in rap music and he helps promote YMCMB by doing songs with them so blame the Rap Devil.

    47. does diddy release any other type of music himself? what was his bullshit group he just had wit him and the bitches singing?

    48. Salute to HipahopDX for showing how a misleading title and stupid people who can’t comprehend the English language can get over 100 comments that have nothing to do wih what Diddy actually said.

    49. I agree with diddy, but the hypocrisy of that comment is too strong. Remember Diddy contributed to all that soft shit.

      1. Diddy never cross-dressed in his videos or beefed with POP stars.
Diddy never dyed his hair blonde or shaved off all his facial hair to appear more feminine.

Yeah Diddy used a lot of R&B samples and a lot of swagged out imagery but he mixed in Biggie, Black Rob, The Lox, G Dep & Shyne in there too.

Diddy wasn’t kissing dudes in the mouth and letting dudes sit on his face like thes fags are doing today making gay-love songs like Mackelmore and Murs.

    50. “Boredom??? So intelligent lines/bars over hot samples chopped up are boring to you?”

Intelligent lines? You must be snorting lines cause Kendrick ain’t saying anything even remotely intelligent. He has some entertaining lines, but that’s about it.

      1. you judging a book by its cover i think, you honestly wouldnt say that if you ever listened to one his albums or even a couple songs

    51. “he listens to birdman and pitbull”

I’d rather listen to a real entertainer like Pitbull than some overhyped nigga with big ears.

      1. “Anonymous (aka a Quote-Man reply):

“you slam Pitbull for going techno or whatever you want to call it but call weezys testing rock waters as evolving??”

Rock and rap have always been indirectly linked. People don’t embrace techno like they do rock, so when Pitbull decided to start doing club music he lost a large portion of his rap only fans.

    52. “Quoteman actually digs latino rap”

If you did your homework half a man you’d find a lot people do. There’s a huge indie market for a lot of Latin rappers. Maybe if you branched off from Kenwack and J Snore, you’d realize this.

    53. “you dont have no idea what real hiphop is go”

Real hip hop lol Kendrick gets played in cars with the windows up. That’s some real insight for your bitch ass.

      1. but you were the one saying no one plays kendrick and we all saw control and bet awards and the love he gets

you the one acting like some cali boys blasting dre in the car solidifies your bitchassness

you just a pussy ass internet f*ckboy
