DaBaby Argues His ‘Jail’ Verse Is Better Than JAY-Z’s: ‘You Heard Both Of Them?’

DaBaby has never been short on confidence, and his latest bold claim is that his verse on Kanye West‘s 2021 Donda cut “Jail” is better than JAY-Z‘s.

The North Carolina rapper was a guest on the latest episode of Shannon Sharpe’s Club Shay Shay podcast, which dropped on Wednesday (November 15). When the former NFL player brought up Lil Yachty’s previous sentiments that DaBaby bested Hov on the song, the former couldn’t help but to agree.

“It was. You heard both of them?” he asked Sharpe. “JAY-Z, I ain’t got nothing but respect for you. Was your verse better than mine? Come on, OG. It wasn’t. That’s okay. We ain’t do it at the same time. It ain’t like you had the ability to be able to say, ‘Hold on, [let me do it over].’ We did it in two different times. But definitely.”

During the debut episode of Yachty’s podcast A Safe Place in July, the Atlanta rapper took a moment to fire off a hot take he had about the Donda cut.

“Something I’ve wanted to talk about for a long time,” Yachty began. “The song ‘Jail’ with Kanye West.”

“The one with the greatest rapper ever on it and the one with DaBaby on it,” his co-host MitchGoneMad chimed in.

“In my personal opinion, I think DaBaby had a better verse,” Yachty continued. “I know the conversation of JAY-Z versus DaBaby is insane, but I honestly think his verse was better … I feel that’s gonna get me a lot of heat anyway. Maybe not as heated as the whole Biggie situation I dealt with in 2016.”

MitchGoneMad went on to say that DaBaby likely could physically knock out Hov, but that he was unsure about Yachty’s personal take. He then reminded Yachty that the Roc Nation boss brought Oprah to the Brooklyn, New York housing projects he grew up in back in 2009.

“Who gives a fuck,” Yachty said with a laugh.

Kanye West released “Jail” originally with JAY-Z when Donda debuted on streaming services in August 2021. A few days later, Ye dropped “Jail Pt 2.” which featured a guest verse from DaBaby, as well as vocals from Marilyn Manson.

The collaboration was met with backlash due to both artists’ respective controversies at the time. DaBaby had come under fire for homophobic comments at Rolling Loud Miami just weeks earlier, while Manson was facing sexual assault allegations from multiple women, including his former partner Evan Rachel Wood.

In other DaBaby news, the “Bop” rapper caught up with HipHopDX on the red carpet at the 2023 BET Hip Hop Awards last month, and revealed how he set himself up for the future with his first big payout.

“First thing I did was buy my estate, you know what I mean?” he began. “I got something there for my daughters that can’t nobody take away from them. And it’s just like Wonderland. It’s my version of Neverland. Actually I got my mama a crib first, then I did that. And I just reinvested in myself, period. I got all the camera equipment that they shoot your favorite television shows and favorite movies with.”

He continued: “I pretty much started a film production company the entire time while I was running the label – while I was one of the biggest stars at the label that I was signed to. So I had a lot of things going on all at the same time while I was dealing with all my personal issues a lot of people ain’t know I had going on.
