DaBaby has reflected on the homophobic statements he made at Rolling Loud Miami in 2021, explaining that his remarks cost him a pretty penny.

The “Suge” rapper sat down with Shannon Sharpe’s Club Shay Shay podcast on Wednesday (November 15), where he revealed that despite losing an eye-watering $200million because of his comments, he realized that it was also a teachable moment that came with an important lesson.

“In hindsight, that parked me,” he said. “Who is to say where I would be mentally and spiritually had I not been forced to sit my ass down and self-reflect? Because I still didn’t sit down when the incident took place. I’m fighting like ‘Hell nah, that ain’t what it is. I’m telling y’all that ain’t what it is.’ God knows I’m a good fighter, but he was like ‘Yeah, you a good fighter, but sit yo ass down.’”

He continued: “I don’t regret anything that I done been through. It feels so good to be able say that and mean it. I done probably said that before but I ain’t mean it. It’s like ‘Boy I wish I had […] $200million, y’all robbed me.’ I don’t feel like that. I really feel like that’s a blessing in disguise at this point in my life and I just came to that realization in the past two weeks.”

The incident made national headlines and drew ire from countless people, including pop star Dua Lipa and Slut Walk founder Amber Rose.

In July 2021, the Billboard chart-topping rapper issued a tweet apologizing for his statements.

“Anybody who done ever been effected [sic] by AIDS/HIV y’all got the right to be upset,” he wrote. “What I said was insensitive even though I have no intentions on offending anybody. So my apologies. But the LGBT community … I ain’t trippin on y’all, do you. y’all business is y’all business.”

In response to DaBaby’s apology, Warner Music Group artist CHIKA immediately questioned his statement.

“Then why are you tryna insert yourself into it?” she tweeted in response. “Must be OUR business, huh, Jonny?” referring to DaBaby’s real name, Jonathan Lyndale Kirk.

She then dug up a photo of DaBaby performing in a giant diaper and wrote, “DaBaby walked around in a diaper surrounded by n-ggas but wanna speak on…the gays???”

CHIKA continued, “Maybe change your fuckin flow for ONCE and write a song you haven’t written before being a homophobic piece of shit. You are quite literally mediocre in every way. Don’t let that money go to your head, kiddo.”
