Chris Rock‘s got jokes ahead of former President Donald Trump‘s expected detainment, arguing his arrest would only make him more popular, just like it once did for 2Pac.

According to a report from Deadline on Monday (March 20), the comedian addressed the topic at a recent event where Adam Sandler received the Mark Twain Humorist award. While presenting the honor to Sandler, Rock made the crowd laugh with his lines about Trump.

“Are you guys really going to arrest Trump? Do you know that this is only going to make him more popular?” Chris Rock said. “It is like arresting 2Pac. He’s just going to sell more records. Are you stupid? He slept with a porn star and paid off someone so his wife wouldn’t find out. That’s romantic.”

Trump is expected to be detained amid an ongoing investigation over whether alleged “hush money” paid to porn star Stormy Daniels should be considered an illegal campaign expense. In a post to his Truth Social account on Saturday (March 18), Trump himself posted about his pending arrest and tried to incite his followers to protest.

“I WILL BE ARRESTED ON TUESDAY OF NEXT WEEK. PROTEST, TAKE OUR NATION BACK!” he wrote.

However, the Washington Post reports that the disgraced politician’s advisers said they have not yet received a “notification” about an indictment, and that Trump was predicted the timing based on media reports.

In other news, Chris Rock made headlines earlier this month for his Netflix comedy special Selective Outrage, which was the first live show the streaming platform had ever aired. Of course he had to address the Will Smith Oscars slap – but he waited until about an hour into his set to do so.

When he finally did get to the topic, he explained that Will Smith actually inspired the title for the special.

“Will Smith practices ‘Selective Outrage,’” Rock explained. “Everybody who really knows, knows I had nothing to do with that shit. I didn’t have any ‘entanglements.’ His wife was fucking her son’s friend. I normally would not talk about this shit…

“I have no idea why two talented people would do something that fucking lowdown,” he continued. “We’ve all been cheated on. Everybody in here been cheated on. None of us has ever been interviewed by the person that cheated on us… on television. She hurt him way more than he hurt me.”

Chris Rock went on to tell the crowd that he attempted to reach out to Will Smith and offer his support following his now infamous sit-down on his wife Jada’s Red Table Talk.

“Everybody in the world called him a bitch,” he said, later referencing The Breakfast Club, Drink Champs, and other talk shows that poked fun at the situation. “I tried to call the muthafucka. I tried to call that man and give him my condolences. He didn’t pick up for me. Everybody called him a bitch and who does he hit? Me.”

As to what led him to include Jada in his onstage commentary at the Oscars, Chris Rock flat out said that she “started it” when she singled him out for agreeing to host the awards show in 2016.

“She fucking said [I] should quit because Will didn’t get nominated for Concussion,” he quipped. “What the fuck? So then I do some jokes about it. Who gives a fuck? That’s how it is. She started it. I finished it. Nobody’s picking on this bitch. She started this shit. Nobody was picking on her.”
