Charlie Wilson Sues EMI and Heineken

Charlie Wilson, lead singer of The Gap Band, sued EMI Music Inc. and Heineken Inc. on Friday for using a song he recorded with Snoop Dogg without permission.

The song in question, Beautiful (off of Snoop Dogg’s Paid Tha Cost to Be Da Bo$$), was used in an advertisement for Heineken Premium Light Beer. According to Reuters, the singer filed suit against Capitol Records (the American label of EMI) and the American division of Heineken Inc.

In the suit, the singer states that portions of the song are used in the commercial (featuring his vocals and those of Pharrell Williams) were licensed by Capitol without permission.

The commercial has been shown on TV and on the website www.heinekenlight.com.

The suit also claims that EMI has failed to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars gained from both Beautiful, and the song You’ve Got What I Want (recorded with Snoop Dogg, Jelly Roll, Ludacris and Goldie Loc).
