Chance The Rapper is presumably still riding high after his glorious night at the 59th Annual Grammy Awards, where he picked up not one, but three golden gramophones for Best New Artist, Best Rap Album and Best Rap Performance. Continuing the wave, the Chi-Town native held a press conference on Monday (March 6) and announced he is donating $1 million to Chicago Public Schools.
Held at Westcott Elementary School, two blocks away from where Chano grew up, the event featured a lengthy speech by the impassioned rapper, who clearly takes public education seriously and considers Chicago’s children as the city’s “most valuable resource.”
It follows his meeting with Illinois governor Bruce Rauner last week, where they discussed public education and other issues affecting the city of Chicago and Illinois in general. Unfortunately, Chance deemed the meeting “unsuccessful.” He went on to express his frustration and disappointment with Governor Rauner’s “inaction” and says that will not deter him from doing everything he can to help.
“If the governor does not act, CPS [Chicago Public Schools] will be forced to end school 13 days early, which means over 380,000 kids will not have adult supervised activities in June and could possibly be put in harm’s way,” the Coloring Book rapper said with concern.
The “oohs” and “aahs” could be heard from the young crowd as the million-dollar check was presented. The excitement was also palatable when Chance mentioned he would be talking to Southside Chicago MC Common about what they could accomplish together.
Check out the speech above and visit Chance’s website here, for more information on how to donate to the cause.
Wonderful work by chance the rapper. Wish more rappers can actually do something for the people rather than talking about it (or embarrassing themselves on social media). For all you CRAKKKERS and distractions that are about to say something stupid and negative don’t bother responding
race baiting post funded by George soros
Good for that man, wish more were like him. Free music + charitable donations to a worthy cause, well done Chance.
99.9% of the time, it’s NOT even the artists’ own money that’s being donated. Be ANONYMOUS about it instead looking for a giant pat-on-the-back. And I don’t even think that HE finished high school? Got busted for weed in his junior year.
Dude shut up. In all the negativity through out the country let alone Chicago, this is great news. It’s alot better than some who dissed who nonsense. Grow up young fella.
Agreed, great news and sets a good example regardless of his personal educational decisions. And props to hiphopdx for not race baiting in this story for once. Down with racism!
Plus him announcing his donation can hopefully encourage more celebs to step up and help out.
Cry me a river, Timberlake! Nobody’s forcing you gang-bangers to pick up a gun and shoot each other for fun 24/7. Being poor ISN’T an excuse for killing one another on a daily basis. Sorry to break it to you, Sling Blade, but there’s a bazillion other cities that suffer from poverty that aren’t out here doing drive-by’s like it’s a sport JUST because they’re poor. It’s black culture, plain and simple. Everything from your music to your lifestyle, promotes nothing but “street life” and I’d bet that you’re probably one of those sh*thead kids who comments how “lit” their BS music is on rap websites all day, yet wants to play the role of MLK when Chance decides to “donate” a tax write-off. FOH. It’s all propaganda that’s been done before. It’s black on black crime in Chicago, nothing more. Clean your own backyard, OG Bobby Johnson!
A mill that’s cool but when the deficit is 600 million that aint shit. Would of been bettet of starting a scholarship program or something to help with uniforms and school supplies. Maybe donate some laptops for in school use.
Where’s your donation?
A million is a lot especially since Chance probably just now became a millionaire though hard touring. A million is a LOT to him and regular folks
Prolly his dad’s money anyways
Dude does something good and people are all in the comments being sour as f#ck.. lmao.. yal are bitter.. its sad how people act on the internet.. venting behind a keyboard spreading hate.. spitting venom.. yal are lame.
F these comments congrats Chance for giving a fuck about your community. Other Chi City rappers (Kanye) can do alot more but he took the initiative. These political assholes don’t care only we got us.
After he cut the check he took out his phone and made all the kids bust out 20 push ups for him cuz “he ain’t giving out no free money”. Wait….that was Meek Mill for $20.
@SMFH Judging by his use of the words serendipitous and caveat and he used them in the right context shows me that he may have dropped out in high school but he is no dummy by any stretch of the imagination, props to him for that huge donation.
Whelp, who knew that using proper grammar would detract people from him being kicked out of school for selling weed in his junior year? Stupendous assessment on your behalf, Einstein. See what I did there? Anybody can look the part, doesn’t mean that he’s not a tool shed. As aforementioned, donate anonymously without seeking the public’s approval. Trust me, that’s exactly why these “celebs” do it. It’s not his money to begin with. *insert more intelligent mind-blowing dialogue*
This is what America needs. More people, who CAN help, helping. And to you all saying it should have been anonymous, I disagree. If it was, the issue wouldn’t be at the for front, the word wouldn’t be out. And if you said that you clearly didn’t listen to what he actually said.
ok, so he is cool now cause he gave up some money? that was exactly what he planned for, its a manouver to uplift his character and everybody falls for it
*round of applause* At least somebody else sees through this nonsense.
