Busta Rhymes Tells Crowd To ‘Put Them Devices Down’ During Essence Festival Set

Busta Rhymes took some time out of his performance during this weekend’s Essence Festival to make sure audience members were staying in the moment.

At one point during his performance on Friday (July 5), the veteran rapper appeared to take issue with the amount of people he saw on their phones.

“Fuck them cameraphones too,” he said. “Let’s get back to interacting like humans. Put them weird-ass devices down.

“I ain’t from that era,” he continued. “Them shits don’t control the soul. Fuck your phone.”

In addition to having problems with electronics, the Dungeon Dragon seemed to object to the amount of people in the Ceasar Superdome who were seated during the performance.

“I will point every last one of y’all out until y’all asses is up,” he said to the crowd. “Thirty-three years of doing this shit, I ain’t used to n-ggas sitting down at my show. I don’t give a fuck. All age groups, get your ass up now.”

Busta had a much more positive experience late last month when it was announced that he’ll soon be receiving a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Organizers revealed its Class of 2025 on June 24, with Prince, The Isley Brothers, Jane Fonda, Nia Long, David Beckham and Green Day among the slew of entertainers in line to receive a star next year alongside Busta.

Busta celebrated the news on Instagram, writing: “AS YOU WILL CONTINUE TO HEAR IT FROM ME EVERY SINGLE DAY, THE BLESSINGS DON’T STOP SO WE WILL NEVER EVER STOP!! THANK YOU TO EVERYONE INVOLVED WITH CHOOSING ME TO BE BLESSED WITH SUCH A PRESTIGIOUS ACCOLADE SUCH AS THE HOLLYWOOD STAR ON THE @hwdwalkoffame.

    “BEING IN SUCH INCREDIBLE COMPANY FOR THE CLASS OF 2025 WITH SUCH ICONS AS PRINCE x @theisleybrothers @fantasia @iamnialong @sherrieshepherd @courtneybvance @glynnturman1 @mistyonpointe @greenday @depechemode @keithurban @georgestrait @somoslosbukis @theb52sband @wartheband @adamcarolla CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL OF US!!”

He added: “WE WORKED HARD AND WILL CONTINUE TO WORK HARD BECAUSE WE LOVE IT TO MUCH!! BY THE WAY WE AIN’T NEVER STOPPING!! BIG #BLOCKBUSTA TYPE SHIT!! IT’S A CELEBRATION BIT%#ES!!”

    1. Can’t disagree with him. The smart phones existence is very beneficial to us, it helps us stay connected 24/7… but it’s also a detriment to humanity. When I’m at concerts, the phone is out for 30 seconds maybe. Even then, I want to not do that. I always joke about the girls in my life who post 10+ snaps of a concert they’re at… “if you don’t snap you’re concert, we’re you even there!?!?”. Superficial world. I get it, but it’s a sad life we’re all subjected to due to technology. I’d prefer to go back to 2003 tech. Ipods, flip phones, PCs, laptops only if you were wealthy, and so on. Hell, even ps3 and 360 had superior enjoyability.

      1. Exactly how I feel about the current technology situation. Its sad to see people (me included sometimes) be slaves to their phones. Things are getting a lot weirder now with a.i too. I’d go back to the 2000’s in a heartbeat

    2. I don’t understand, if you paid money to see Busta perform then why are you on your phone🤔. I just can’t figure that out. Carry on!!!

      1. The real question why anyone would pay to see this old washed up fake g. Went from leaders of the new with the goofy hats to talking about shooting people lol what

    3. He loves to argue with the crowd. Did that way back in Bremen Germany, messing up his whole concert. Never again

    4. He did it with all respect to everyone and it was brave and good he did it because folks are becoming controlled by these devices and not even noticing the moment anymore. Hooray for Busta!! The Leader of the New School baby
