When asked if being an independent artist is better than being a mainstream artist, during an interview with Vlad TV, Boaz shared his belief that in today’s musical climate, a lot of rappers are “getting lost in the mainstream.”
The Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania lyricist went on to speak on the benefits of being an indie artist. He revealed that being independent allows you to be yourself, work freely, and receive more support from your label.
Boaz, who is currently signed to Rostrum Records, added that being an indie artist is the better choice for him at this point in his career.
“I think given the level of artistry you doing and what type of push you want behind you it just matters,” Boaz said. “Cause right now you see so many rappers getting lost in the mainstream. And independently, it just gives you that room to be a little bit yourself, work freely, and hopefully you got the support of your label. Where they understand and they want to support you fully. For me right now, it’s best to be on the indie. Cause I’m still going through a lot of development. Trying to get myself to that next level, man. So, you don’t wanna jump to the big labels when you ain’t quite ready yet.”
As an artist signed to Rostrum Records, Boaz was asked what led to him signing with the label. According to the rapper, it was the label being based in his hometown that helped sway his decision.
“Well, Rostrum is a label that’s based out of Pittsburgh,” he said. “That’s where we all from. It was pretty much the label that just made a hard impact on the industry at the time when I was developing myself. So, we all like a tight knit community of Hip Hop in Pittsburgh. It’s only a few studios. It’s only a few places to do venues. So, every time Hip Hop come out of there it embraces itself in Pittsburgh. And they seen my movement, man. And with the success of Wiz Khalifa and Mac Miller it gave us room to do different things. And I was one of those opportunities.”
Boaz signed with Rostrum Records in 2012, and joins the likes of Wiz Khalifa and indie pop band Donora, as an artist signed to the label. During his interview with Vlad TV, which comes weeks after the release of Boaz’s Intuition album, the rapper also spoke on his name and growing up in Pittsburgh.
