Big K.R.I.T. Explains “Live From The Underground” Backlash

After releasing his first Cadillactica single in April, Big K.R.I.T. spoke with The Urban Daily and broke down some of the lines on the song.

Explaining one of his lyrics as a response to backlash he received about hooks on his first album, K.R.I.T. recalled hook-writing on songs and albums from years ago.

“The actual line that I expressed as far as, ‘I hope the hook wasn’t too simple,’ it’s because of a lot of backlash I got off my 2012 debut project with Def Jam, Live From The Underground, about how people felt like my hooks were too simple,” he said. “It was kind of weird in a day and age where hooks are meant to be made where people can remember them. It’s not that I took that to heart, I was like, ‘Oh, okay, if you feel that way then I’m gonna shine light on how simple hooks can be in general.’ Most of the classic records that you love and grew up listening to weren’t the most complex hooks ever. They were very simple but they were heartfelt, they were hooks you could understand and feel.”

Speaking about another reference on “Mt. Olympus,” K.R.I.T. spoke about remaining loyal to Mississippi in an industry that often overlooks the state’s relevance.

“The line about labels signing rappers because of their talents or based off of what’s going on or is it all hype?” he said, “I wanted to put that all in the middle of the actual verse just to make people think about that, as far as, ‘You ain’t sold out a show until you sell out one in Mississippi.’ A lot of artists never go to Mississippi and perform and a lot of their fanbase is there, they actually go to the store and buy physical copies of the album, not digital, physical. But they bypass Mississippi as far as tours is concerned, shows. I always go to Mississippi when I have a tour.”

Earlier this month, K.R.I.T. announced a new tour throughout the US. “I am excited to get on the road,” Big K.R.I.T. said in a press release. “This tour will give fans a little taste of what is to come. I am traveling with a message, a message about our culture-where we were and what we have come to. I want to make sure people are paying attention to what is happening in their lives and in Hip Hop today.”

    1. My last pay check was $9500 working 12 hours a week online. My sisters friend has been averaging 15k for months now and she works about 20 hours a week. I can’t believe how easy it was once I tried it out.

    2. It’s true, though. Some of the hooks on LFTU were too simple and even repetitive. The album as a whole wasn’t terrible, but the hooks were the weak points and dragged the album down. KRIT is one of my favorites out of the new generation, so I’m still checking for Cadillactica and hoping he delivers a more solid album this time.

    3. hooks? i could care less about the hooks, the disappointing aspect of his album was the production. wasnt bad, but not being able to sample as much as on his free releases definitely made the album suffer a bit. still good, just not great like he became known for on his free projects.

      1. Exactly, the production quality suffered greatly. The verses weren’t all that great either (Rich Dad Poor Dad being the obvious exception). Still a quality album but could have been better.

    4. Big Krit is very underrated his live from the underground album was dope he produced and record and mixed his own album him Cee- lo and J Cole are the only artist to do that period

    5. I think the album in general was too simple by the standards fan expected after all of the incredible mixtapes KRIT put out..I know i ran out and copped Live the first day and was very let down. After that i havent really been too focused on him but hopefully the sophomore release will put that to bed…

      1. Which means that you wasnt a fan at all? U were expecting what a SUPER DUPER Classic? He disappoint you? Yeah it wasnt Classic but it was a good album. Krit was a rookie who had a nice season from an all american college season.

    7. Okay, the hooks were simple but I don’t expect him to make great hooks (unless he sings) all the time. What he excels at is his verses and production especially with samples.

Live from the Underground production was okay but you can tell the labels controlled what went on the album. Because his mixtapes are something spectacular. His mixtapes has funky bass lines, kick ass samples, and soulful energy all over it. Sadly, I like “Rich Dad, Poor Dad.” Lyrics weren’t all that but the overall theme of the song was pretty pimp to me. The 1st track and “My Sub Pt 2” were the only ones I really played on that album. His first album was a learning lesson on a major label. Next one might be special.

    8. Im making $86 an hour working from home. I was shocked when my neighbour told me she was averaging $95 but I see how it works now.I feel so much freedom now that Im my own boss.go to this site home tab for more detai….

    9. That’s the problem with fucking with major labels. I’m a big KRIT (no pun intended) fan but was very disappointed with LFTU. Hopefully Caddilactica puts him back. Mt. Olympus was fire. Hope he brings more on that level.

    10. Start working part time. I kept hearing other people tell me how much money they can make online so I decided to look into it. Well, it was all true and has totally changed my life.

    11. LFTU is Big K.R.I.T.’s “worst” project but it’s far from being trash… I thought it was still a decent listen but compared to his mixtapes, it’s at the bottom
