Aaliyah Biopic To Cover R. Kelly Marriage

With production scheduled to start this summer, a Lifetime network film chronicling the life and career of R&B singer Aaliyah will reportedly incorporate a long denied marriage to R. Kelly.

In 1994, Aaliyah and R. Kelly were reportedly married while the Age Ain’t Nothing but a Number singer was 15 years old (Kelly was 27). While both artists denied the claims, Vibe published a copy of a marriage certificate with Aaliyah’s age falsified as 18. The singer’s parents reportedly annulled the marriage the following year.

According to Rolling Stone, the Lifetime network movie Aaliyah: Princess of R&B is built on a 2002 biography of the singer titled Aaliyah: More Than a Woman.

In a comment published by the New York Post, the Lifetime movie’s executive producer Debra Martin Chase claims that the R. Kelly narrative “will be explored with care.”

“Aaliyah’s personal and professional relationship with R. Kelly will be explored with care in the film as we set out to depict her life with the utmost respect,” she said. “Above all else, it’s our hope to inspire an entirely new generation with her music and larger-than-life talent.”

Still, Rolling Stone reports that the singer’s family has publicly denounced the Lifetime production, saying, “she deserves to have a tribute much more grand than a television network debut.”

“Aaliyah was more than a singer, she was–and is still–an American music icon whose legacy continues to live on and influence today’s music culture, just as Ray Charles, Notorious B.I.G., Selena and Johnny Cash,” a statement released by the family said.

“Considering the magnitude of her fans’ affection alone, she deserves to have a tribute much more grand than a television network debut that won’t even consider the perspectives of those who were closest to Aaliyah,” the statement said. “Disregarding the families and dishonoring the legacies of celebrated figures who have passed on, big networks want to exploit their stories for a buck.  We’re here to make it clear that it’s not okay!”

Disney Channel alumni Zendaya has been cast for the role of Aaliyah and is slated to record at least four of the singer’s original tracks for the movie.

      1. Does water come out of a hose? Of course he pee’d on her. It was Niagra Falls every night after she did her homework.

    1. Oh shit, they’re including news about her marriage in her biography? No way, that’s just a fucking shocker

    2. Why is R. Kelly not in prison ????? Could be why now he has money problems, just like the situation with Micheal Jackson

    3. lifetime? a spanish chick with only 2 american songs like Selena gets a huge movie in theaters but our own american r & b princess whos had multiplatinum albums get LIFETIME!!!!!!!!!!!! bullshit

      1. Educate yourself idiot. Selena was not “spanish” she wasn’t born in Spain. She was born in the U.S. from Mexican parents, she was Mexican-American. Second, what the fuck does Selena have to do with this? Aaliyah deserves a Hollywood movie for sure.

      2. i never said she wasnt from america dumbass i said she had spanish music and only 2 american english songs asshole

      3. “lifetime? a spanish chick with only 2 american songs like Selena gets a huge movie in theaters but our own american r & b princess whos had multiplatinum albums get LIFETIME!!!!!!!!!!!! bullshit”

lol kick rocks nikka ain’t nobody here tryna see an aaliyah movie lmao unless you a faggot of course but damn the girl is dead get over it already

    4. If her family cared so much about a movie project why have they been blocking the major motion picture that was put together by a big hollywood studio?!?

    5. Aaliyah’s parents made it clear that they did not support the production- If you look at Zendaya’s instagram video she says she reached out to the family about movie but later dropped out because of the lack of support for the production. Zendaya did not feel “morally right” to continue to work on the project. The marriage situation between Aaliyah and R. Kelly is a private matter! look how they handled it at the time, did you think her family wants that on a big screen?
