Kendrick Lamar Takes Home Best Rap Album At 65th Annual Grammy Awards: See All The Winners

Kendrick Lamar has added to his collection of Grammy Awards, taking home trophies in three of the eight categories for which he was nominated at the 65th Annual Grammy Awards.

Two of the rapper’s wins were announced during the Grammys Premiere Ceremony, just ahead of the televised broadcast of the main show, which started at 8:00 p.m. on Sunday (February 5).

“The Heart Part 5” took home the award for Best Rap Song, beating out tracks by DJ Khaled, Jack Harlow, Future and Gunna. The song also earned Kendrick the Best Rap Performance award, marking his sixth win in the category.

Taking the stage to accept the Best Rap Album trophy, presented by Cardi B during the televised portion of the Grammys, Kendrick Lamar thanked “the culture” for allowing him to “evolve” and create his fifth studio album Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers.

“First and foremost, I wanna thank my family for giving me the courage and the vulnerability to share these stories and to share my truth with this album,” he started his acceptance speech. “That’s first and foremost. I wanna thank my fans for trusting me with these words.

“You know as artists, we all entertainers, stupid. And we say things to provoke thoughts and feelings and emotions. So making this record was one of my toughest records to make; and it allowed me to do that and it allowed me to share other people’s experiences.”

The Compton native continued: “So going back and thinking back where I started with rap and how far it’s came, I would like to thank the culture for allowing me to evolve in order to make a song like ‘Mother I Sober.’ That’s special to me.

“All we ever wanted was to be the biggest underground artist of all time. And I finally found imperfection with this album so I appreciate y’all. I love y’all.”

Kendrick Lamar — who has now won a total of 16 Grammy Awards — came into the competition with one more nomination than Adele’s seven and one less than Beyoncé’s nine nominations. Future, Lizzo and Mary J. Blige each had six.

Breakout stars GloRilla and Latto both earn their first-ever Grammy nominations, while veterans JAY-Z, Lil Wayne and Rick Ross are also in the mix.

Fans may have noticed several big names missing from this year’s nominees. Prior to the nominations being announced, Drake, The Weeknd and Silk Sonic (Anderson .Paak and Bruno Mars) all declined to submit their respective solo material for Grammys consideration.
