Sometimes Hip Hop can move at a pace too frantic for even the most devoted fan to keep up with. Albums and mixtapes are released at breakneck speed, careers are made and broken with the swipe of a pen, and somewhere in between all the madness actual music (the quality of which vacillates between excellent and god awful) is being made. Twitter provides a nice summary of everything 140 characters at a time. And if you’re the type that would rather not be bothered with stepping into the Twitterverse to catch up on the latest in Hip Hop, we’ve filtered through the top rapper’s tweets and consolidated all the week’s events into one convenient feed.
This week, Drake swore off interviews after appearing to blame a now-deceased Phillip Seymour Hoffman for “stealing” his Rolling Stone cover. Game also clarified his role in the now-aborted celebrity boxing match with George Zimmerman, and Danny Brown announced he’s been Lean free for nearly two months. Check the rest of the week’s top tweets below.
Kanye Celebrates “The College Dropout’s” 10-Year Anniversary
Ten years ago today we finally released what had been my life’s work up to that point: The College Dropout.
” KANYE WEST (@kanyewest) February 10, 2014
It’s always a treat when Kanye West tweets. Although we’re mainly used to Ye’s notorious ALL CAPS Twitter rants, this tweet was special. It was the tweet of a man who was celebrating the 10-year anniversary of his debut album, the album that launched his rap career. While Kanye West had a reputable career as a producer, his vision included being in front of the mic. His tweet was followed by, “I say “finally” because it was a long road, a constant struggle, and a true labor of love. Ten years fly by.
Action Bronson Supports Couples Figure Skating At The Olympics
ALL I KNOW IS THAT THE USA JUST MERKED COUPLES FIGURE SKATING!!!!!
” FREE BIG BODY (@ActionBronson) February 9, 2014
Action Bronson is just like us. He watches the couples figure skating event at the Sochi Winter Olympics. Whether it was by accident or premeditated, it(TM)s nice to know that the foodie rapper knows a good figure skating routine when he sees one.
Danny Brown Kicks His Lean Habit
Haven’t drunk any lean since Jan. 17th Y(TM)
— Danny Brown (@xdannyxbrownx) February 25, 2014
Much has been made about Danny Brown(TM)s drug consumption”some of it even coming from oeThe Hybrid himself. Cross oeLean, the addictive mix of Promethazine and Codeine, off the list. According to Danny, he(TM)s joined the list of notable rappers to kick the habit and hasn’t self medicated on any syrup since mid-January.
Killer Mike Meets Lorde At Laneway 2014
OH Lord I saw her perform and then met @Lorde #Laneway2014 Day Was Made!!! pic.twitter.com/Xv7UMAFD0E
” Killer Mike (@KillerMikeGTO) February 9, 2014
Who knew Killer Mike was a Lorde fan? While out in Auckland, New Zealand for the St. Jerome(TM)s Laneway Festival, Killer Mike (he was there performing with El-P as Run The Jewels) caught a performance and later met the New Zealand songstress Lorde. If you don(TM)t know of the Grammy award winner that your favorite rapper is a fan of, feel free to Spotify her album, Pure Heroine, and do some catching up.
Drake Pouts After Philip Seymour Covers Rolling Stone
I’m done doing interviews for magazines. I just want to give my music to the people. That’s the only way my message gets across accurately.
” Drizzy (@Drake) February 13, 2014
Although clarification on Drake(TM)s behalf has currently been released, Drake tweeted and deleted angry tweets about losing his Rolling Stone cover to the deceased actor Philip Seymour Hoffman. First he was upset that he was oemisquoted when asked about Yeezus, then he went at the magazine for their second mistake, taking his cover from him. In the end, Drake was having an emotional day (as he told to us on his blog) and decided to vent a little on Twitter. Too bad he forgot that whatever he sends out in 140 characters, gets sent out to his 14 million followers.
Tyler, The Creator Hints At The Original Version Of “The Purge”
THE PURGE…….I WISH THEY DIDNT TAKE ALL MY BASS OUT AND KEPT THE CRAZY GIRL SCREAMING AND SHIT! YEAH
— Tyler, The Creator (@fucktyler) February 25, 2014
If you think ScHoolboy Q’s “The Purge” is one of the darker moments on his Oxymoron album, imagine what it would’ve sounded like if Tyler, The Creator had his way. The de facto leader of Odd Future, who produced the song and supplies its chorus, had a slightly darker vision in mind. Here’s a hint: it involves more bass and women screaming.
Freddie Gibbs Has Thoughts For NFL Commissioner Roger Goddell
Dear Roger Goodell, u can’t make niggaz stop saying the word nigga my nigga.
— Freddie Gibbs (@FreddieGibbs) February 24, 2014
If you’ve been paying attention to Hip Hop for the last week or so, a rather familiar five-letter word that starts with N has been making headlines. Regardless of how you feel about it, it’s probably safe to say it will continue to be heard frequently in Rap songs. Would you like a culturally co-opted racial epithet now used as a term of endearment with your NFL football? League Commissioner Roger Goddell says no, and clearly Freddie Gibbs has some thoughts on the matter.
J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League & 9th Wonder Mourn Director Harold Ramis
Damn RIP RT @9thWonderMusic: Rest In Peace Harold Ramis “Egon Spengler” #GhostBusters
— J.U.S.T.I.C.E LEAGUE (@JusticeLeague) February 24, 2014
A generation of ‘70s and ‘80s babies collectively mourned the passing of writer and director Harold Ramis. Vasculitis, a disease of the arteries and immune system, claimed Ramis, who died at the age of 69. His comedic stylings, which were most notably found in movies such as Caddyshack, National Lampoon’s Vacation, Groundhog Day and Ghostbusters were clearly not lost on 9th Wonder and J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League.
Eminem To Hit The Road With Rihanna
NYC/DET/LA this August with @Rihanna! #TheMonsterTour – http://t.co/ilA9IqOgIa
— Marshall Mathers (@Eminem) February 22, 2014
They’ve sold millions of singles together, so perhaps it’s only right that Rihanna and Eminem co-headline “The Monster” tour. New York, Los Angeles and Em’s native Detroit will be privy to a set of shows in August. Given that “Love The Way You Lie” has sold 11 million copies, there should be a rather overwhelming demand for tickets. #StadiumStatus.
Game Denies Asking For Money To Box George Zimmerman
RT @BET: Zimmerman Boxing Update: @thegame wanted money + @DMX considering the offer http://t.co/Kqf5S3luF8 – I asked for NO MONEY. #Lies
— Handsome Ass Nigga (@thegame) February 7, 2014
When George Zimmerman (the man who was involved in the killing of Trayvon Martin) announced that he’d be willing to get in the ring with anyone “eleven black people,” rapper Game was one of the first to step up to the challenge. Eventually he’d be deemed “too big” to fight Zimmerman and was taken out of consideration. Now, BET is reporting that West Coast emcee wanted money with his deal which he is denying. If this isn’t true, it’s good that Game is using his social media reach to clarify the situation.
