Kanye West and Filipino comedienne Rufa Mae Quinto in one track? Filipino producer Maaliw explores unlikely connections in his latest ingenious 10-track mix, Oras ng Aliw Vol. 1 (Time for Pleasure)—a play on his moniker.
The mix interpolates mostly top 40 hits with Filipino pop staples and hip hop favorites, including mashups of the N.E.R.D’s “Spaz” 2008 studio instrumental with BLKD’s 2019 single, “Maghimagsik” (Rebel); a garage flip of ‘soul siren’ Nina’s “Someday” (2006) via electronic producer Burial’s “Unite” from 2007’s Box Of Dub: Dubstep And Future Dub; and pop culture cut “Bound 2 (Golagat remix)” featuring Kanye West’s “Bound 2” instrumental (including the sample original, “Bound,” by Ponderosa Twins Plus One from 1971), extracted vocals from Kiyo’s “Ikaw Lang” (Only You), Ebe Dancel’s “Mariposa,” and the “ah, okay” line from Rufa Mae’ Quinto’s titular character in the 2001 comedy film, Booba.
In some cases, Maaliw also ties up tracks with similar themes, such as “The Weekend,” SZA’s standout single off CTRL with Gagong Rapper’s “Kabet,” which both tackles unfaithfulness.
Maaliw, who’s also an audio engineer by trade, promised that there would be more mashups and remixes to come. He also deconstructs samples on YouTube, including Kendrick Lamar’s “LOYALTY.,” which features a sample of Bruno Mars’ “24K Magic.”
