Rich Brian returns with arguably one of his best songs just yet. Premiering today (November 4), “New Tooth” makes a case for the Indonesian rap star settling into adulthood.
Nothing speaks like a forceful, often abrupt transition into manhood like military training can, and Rich Brian’s character attempts to reckon with indelible pain and trauma in his second act as a (fake) bearded businessman in the visual he co-directed with Jason Ano. Rich Brian is also credited as a co-editor and the VFX artist (under his real name Brian Imanuel).
Accompanied by a fitting emotive beat switch a la Flower Boy-era Tyler The Creator (which Rich Brian co-produced with Diamond Pistols). Lyrically, save for the snappy lines like “I’m a star from the start, they be callin’ me Patrick,” the Shang Chi OST rapper’s latest single delves into some of his struggles and wrestling with fame. He goes:
Switchin’ rhyme and I’m feelin’ uninspired
What’s better than sippin’ gin and findin’ my soul in clarity
I’m buryin’ my sins, a blessin’ is on my evidence, ayy
I’m a business man without a business plan
“New Tooth” makes the most out of its nearly 4-minute runtime, ending with an outro that makes for a solid cliffhanger.
Rich Brian is co-headlining this weekend’s Head in the Clouds music festival by 88rising in Pasadena, California, alongside CL, Saweetie, labelmate NIKI and JOJI, and more. 88rising announced earlier this week that they’ve teamed up with Amazon Music to stream the festival via Prime Video and their official Twitch account.
