JRLDM is not one to shy away from exploring heavy themes related to the human condition. His latest single, “Lason” (Poison), delves into the psyche of an alcohol-dependent person.
He tells in a pre-release listening session that the theme of “Lason”—which JRLDM wrote and produced—alludes to his own relationship with alcohol. The muted yet striking Gian Mawo-helmed visual follow JRLDM as he sinks deeper into the bottle, going into alcohol-induced hallucination and paranoia.
But more than anything, “Lason” also articulates a general yet palpable sense of how depression looks and feels like: sleeplessness (“Maguumaga na / pero ‘di pa ako tulog,” which translates to “It’s almost morning / but I’m not yet asleep), inability to feel joy, and in JRLDM’s case, turning to alcohol.
In an artist profile interview with the Filipino artist, he explained that “Lason” is about the feelings of someone who’s miserable. “Kumbaga sa sobrang pait ng buhay sa kanya, palaging alak na lang ang kaharap nya… tapos tinatanong na nya yung sarili nya, ba’t ba ko ganito? Ano ba ang nagawa ko, bakit ba ako nagsa-suffer ng ganito?” (Because he’s embittered with life, he always turns to alcohol… to the point that he asks himself, ‘why am I like this? What did I do to suffer like this?) JRLDM notes that it’s a way for him to tell those who feel the same way that they’re not alone.
This is not the first time JRLDM dug into mental health. Earlier this year, he dropped “Parasitiko” (Parasite) featuring Lexus of Owfuck, which bore similar themes. Last year, he shared “Patiwakal” (Suicide).
