One Time 4 Your Mind: Ranking Nas’ Albums From Best To Worst

While Nas was out celebrating his 44th birthday in style with Nicki Minaj and his 1988 190E Mercedes-Benz, the #DXLive staff was busy ranking Esco’s discography. Jake Rohn, Trent Clark and Marcel Williams took on the daunting task of deciding which albums would slot after Illmatic in a ranking of his entire discography.

    Well, almost.

As it was with sorting through JAY-Z’s discography, Jake decided to be controversial and place Illmatic in the runner-up position. He also ranked The Lost Tapes as Escobar’s eighth-best album as opposed to Marcel (that’s me), who had it ranked as fourth, and Trent, who placed the cutting room floor album as Nas’ third best project.

The debate became contentious when Trent chose to slot It Was Written not only out of the top three but in the fifth spot below God’s Son. The group was in agreement on Nas’ latest effort, Life Is Good, but viewers were none too happy that the trio placed Nasir’s most recent album among the bottom of his discography. Where the team largely agreed was the placement of both Nastradamus and Street’s Disciple as Nasty Nas’ worst LPs.

So who got it right? How do you rank the discography of one of Hip Hop’s most storied MCs? Let us know in the comments.

    1. 1. Illmatic 2. Streets Disciple 4. Life Is Good 5. It Was Written 6. Stillmatic 7. Untitled 8. God’s Son 9. Hiphop Is Dead 10. Nastradamus

      1. I surprised anyone would rate streets disciple that high, most people trash that one although it had it’s good tracks here and there.

      2. His rhymes on streets disciple is fire. The beats are trash for the most part. But he does have gems like Nazareth savage

    2. Who gave you any kind authority over this? As far as I can see its just a bunch of nobodys I never heard of talking about Nas like they know him personally and worked with him or something. I bet there is 3 random people at a bus stop somewhere hving this same conversation. Go make more articles about how “woke” lil uzi vert is or something cause you guys look hella dumb trying to act cool like your opinon on which alvum is best really fn matter. Listen no one cares about what you think your just a paid pencil pushers.

      1. These wankstas deleating comments they don’t like. I told you Trent go listen to it was written again and you delete my opinion.

        1. These fools are the KINGS of deleting comments! What’s the point of having an open discussion comment section if you just DELETE everything you disagree with or shines a bad light on your bum ass article?

          1. I know what your saying this dude Trent sounds dumb when he realised hiphopdx done a article a few months back on how dope it was written was. How u like me now I’m the shit that goes pow making every ghetto foul.I gave you power …

    3. lil yatchy raps circle around “nasty” nas. thats just the simple truth. none of nas albums come even close to the classic debut from ya boy yatchy
      – it’s cha boi.

      1. Lil yatchy huh smdh he not even relevent to music let alone hip-hop see the problem is this generation (u included) are all well mostly all idiots from your lack of appreciation for anything that came before you to the beyond stupid challenges on the internet it’s sad tho bcuz yal have missed the times when music meant something in ten years probaly less nobody and I mean nobody will remember lil yatchy

      2. Again this idiot :)) ur rapper will be done in couple of years :)) none of the new rappers these days will be in the game long enough achive g.o.a.t and have classic albums and track so shut the fuck up lil bitch

    4. I will say this, putting Life is Good towards the bottom let’s me know to not take the conversation serious at all??..Being a journalist doesn’t mean you have the incite or the hip-hop cred to rank the God MC, especially after reading this. Yet, I will say this, the N****r album is a album waaayyy beyond its years. People will listen to that album 15 years from now and understand it’s importance in the world. I’m not say it’s his best, but definitely a great one. Plus, the Nas is Like album??????????

    5. To be honest with someone like Nas you can’t rank his albums he got to many good ones. I love Stillmatic because he came back in proved he was the best still, when people thought he was finished, he needed Jay to diss him like that it was one of the best things to happen to his career, also just to me personally Stillmatic was the first album were his production was really good. Life is Good is very underrated IMO, best production of any album he has ever done. Stay and back when is some of the greatest songs I’ve ever heard. The one area where I feel like Nas messes up is by adding commercial producers like swizz beatz or timberland their sounds just doesn’t match Nas, No Id, Preme, is a way better match, also wish he would do more with Justice League, and try some stuff with Krit. Also every song him and AZ do together ends up being a classic

    6. Hey Marcel. how about a graphic/screengrab of the chart. Kinda like it was in the Jay-Z discography article. That’d make this article 10x s more interesting because the majority of us are not watching that long ass video

      1. I don’t have control over that but duly noted. FYI the the graphic of the rankings are in the body of the article.

      1. I mean, Life is Good is a better album then 4:44 and people are running around calling that a “classic” and we all know that the hiphopdx crew has a uncritical hard on for 4:44.

    7. Top 5, tho all Nasirs works have gems and depth. i would say Hip Hop is dead, Life is Good, God Son, Illmatic, It was written, StillMatic,

    8. I haven’t looked at Trents list but I can guarantee it’s trash. That guy is an idiot. Interesting to see other people’s opinion when it comes to their favourites (except Trent and Victoria obviously)

    9. Marcel you piece of human shit, deletin my comment because I respectfully disagreed with your bum ass list. Y’all Russ fans can suck my dick.

      1. LMAO I’m just a writer my guy. Why would I have the ability to control comments? Not sure how editorial job functions work huh?

    10. 1. it was written 2. i am 3. illmatic 4. hiphop is dead 5. stillmatic 6. untitled 7. god’s son 8. street’s disciple 9. life is good 10. nastradamus

    11. You cornballs at the HHDX office delete opinions but dont delete hurtful, troll like comments from other users. Either way I love the lists.

      Top 5

      1. Illmatic
      2. It Was Written
      3. Stillmatic
      4. Street’s Disciple
      5. God’s Son

    12. no point in me wasting my time to give y’all my opinion y’all delete comments more than I change my drawers (daily) so fuck hhdx as a website and a muthafuckin crew. & if ure down with HHDX then FUCK U TOO! Now delete this for me

    13. Street disciple it’s not one of the worst album Nas made first and foremost.. it could be people least favorite but don’t call it his Worst Album he doesn’t have one… I may not listen to all the songs and all his albums but I could pick a couple songs out of each of them that could change lives..

    14. Life is good is a well put together album.. Rick Ross Mary J on the album..OMG!.. especially after other great album distant relatives!

      1. from nasty nas to escotrash had a spark when ya started but now youre just garbage… i miss that Jay fire.. he had a few classics. not like nas tho

    15. God’s Son is hella underrated… wasn’t a big fan of Hey Nas or Zone Out but the rest of the tracks are classics.

    16. 1)Reasonable Doubt 2)Black Album 3)The Blueprint 4)American Gangster(classic album) 5)4:44. Really no need continuing right..?

      1. It’s weird people choose Reasonable Doubt as Jay-Z’s best album. The beats are okay, Ain’t No *igga kills the album for most people though. Also, it’s really weird that just above average albums like American Gangster and 4:44.

    17. Nas’s only flaw, besides getting on the mafioso rap, is his beats. The bars on Nastradamus and streets disciple are fire, the production ruins it. Same with hip hop is dead.

    18. Illmatic is the most overrated album of all time and the rest of his albums are pure trash with the most shitty beats human ears have ever come across. King HOV has the best discography in the game. “Your best shit ain’t better than my worst shit” Ask Russell Simmons why Nas has the worst career in rap.

      1. Ur the biggest Hov dick sucker :)) always talking shit about Nas or other og rappers

Btw did u know that ur Hov lost a battle to Bizzy Bone ( bone thugs n harmony )

    19. Nas is a good lyricist,i think…
i felt him in patience with Damain Marley…
his LG album is my best so far.

    20. 1. Illmatic
      2. Stillmatic
      3. It was written
      4. Gods Son
      5. I am

Id have to listen to the others more to rank them but y’all sleeping on Untitled, that was one of his realist albums. Life is Good is underrated as fuck too.

    21. Jeebus, not sure if you guys are crapping on Untitled and Life is Good or its one of these situation where its too hard to choose. Street Disciple wasn’t that bad.

        1. Out of all the double hip hop albums that were out at the time, it was one of the more lyrically persuasive ones and yeah its a bit too long but almost all double LP’s are. It wasn’t the mess blueprint 2 was, which you oddly rated well in the Jay Z discography ranking and factually speaking that album just wasn’t bad but a mess.

    22. HHDX, this message is for you.

Why did you delete my comment? Because I said the white boy’s analysis is weak? You can’t denigrate a man who’s known as the epitome of hip-hop and be upset when someone throws shade back at you. It’s like throwing rocks from a glass house.

Eminem is a super fast rapper. But tell me how many people laud him for his content?

      Scarface has content.
      Tupac has content.
      J. Cole
      Kendrick
      Common
      Black thought
      Even Jay Z
      And a bunch of others
But Nas is the king. You won’t understand because you’re shallow

      1. Very true. I feel like 4:44 was long over due. I’ve always respected Nas’s transparency of his everyday life on record. “Daughters” alone puts Life is Good above mediocre.

    23. I used to think Streets Desciple was trash when it 1st dropped but I recently revisited it and I now think it’s one of Nas’ best albums. The albums weakest quality is its lack of cohesion but other than that it’s pretty much pure genius from start to finish. It’s a really heavy album so I guess that’s why it was so off putting initially. I was 14 when it dropped so a lot of the themes and messages went straight over my head at the time. Very mature album. I assume y’all 3 couldn’t have been much older. You should consider revisiting that one.

    24. After Illmatic and It was written, Nas is very hard to judge as he’s had songs with unmatchable lyrics, but the beats are luke warm as best. And lets be real the beat is just as important as the bars if not more important. Illmatic is easily Nas’ best work IMO. When you consider it’s impact, production, lyrics and not to mention its timing that it arrived, It’s hands down in the top 50 albums ever made. After that I would have to say It was written is his next best album….its a toss up after that.
