It should come as no surprise to anyone that the self-proclaimed “King of R&B” Bobby Brown was center stage at the August 29 BET premiere of his biopic, The Bobby Brown Story. Following the success of The New Edition Story (which gained a little under 30 million views when it premiered last winter), it was only right for Bobby to get a piece of the pie. The notorious bad boy does, after all, have a controversial past, including his 15-year marriage to the late Whitney Houston, his multiple arrests, and drug usage.

All of the New Edition members attended to show their support with the exception of Ralph Tresvant and Johnny Gill who are currently estranged from the group. Ralph and Johnny own the New Edition trademark which is why the other members are going on tour under their new stage name RBRM.

The two-night series explores the many trials and tribulations of Brown’s life including the aftermath of getting kicked out of New Edition and his rise to fame as a solo artist. The story also dives deep into his relationship with the mothers of his seven children. Audiences probably will be most shocked by his alleged romance between Brown and Janet Jackson, with the scene of the naked R&B icon getting kicked out of a hotel sure to break Twitter.

Actor Woody McClain reprises his role as Bobby Brown and this time around he dove deep into the downward spiral Brown displayed on the world’s stage. McClain perfectly played the role of the singer in The New Edition Story and proved to be one of the film’s breakout stars. Previously coming from a background of doing Instagram skits, Woody is definitely breaking the norm that actors who rise to prominence from IG cannot play in major acting roles.

Falling the screening guests enjoyed a reception with cocktails and hors d’oeuvres. In true Bobby Brown fashion, he took to the stage to perform a few of his hits including “Every Little Step. Everyone danced and sang along while Bobby passed the mic to his two sons, Bobby Brown Jr. and Landon Brown. Both are clearly following in their father’s footsteps and have the vocals to back it up. Bobby thanked guests for attending before exiting the party with his wife of six years, Alicia Brown, who will also be depicted in the film.

“After seeing both nights, you will know that I’m going to be a new man because I’ve seen everything that I’ve been through, everything that I’ve gone through and for me to know that um, it only gets better. You know, going through the things that I’ve gone through, it can only get better.”

The Bobby Brown Story premieres Tuesday, September 4 and 5 at 9pm/8pm central.

If you were a fan of The New Edition Story, this next installment into the life of one of its most memorable members is definitely something that will be revered for months to come.
