Today marks the 15th anniversary of September 11, 2001; a sole day that would forever change the thought process of national security, not to mention the nature of human existence on this planet.

The fallen World Trade Center has become the tragic symbolism of the 9/11 attacks, which claimed the lives of nearly 3,000 people by the actions of cowardly terrorists (who would later be dealt with in the ensuing years). But as the wounds still fester with pain and aftershock, it’s vital that remember all the events that altered the course of time from September 12 to the present day.

United Airlines Flight 93 a.k.a. The Flight That Fought Back. The 125 people who were killed as they conducted regular Tuesday business within the halls of the Pentagon. The thousands of families affected, most notably the children who were too young to know or remember their parents, cousins, aunts and uncles.

It shall forever be a day no living person should ever mention without reverence, even when the annals of time deceive the mind into thinking it shall be a day of exploitation and financial gain.

Today, several 9/11 memorials are being held across the country, including directly in front of the Pentagon where President Barack Obama addressed a crowd, as well as the nation to commemorate one of the greatest losses the United States has ever endured.

We wonder how their lives might have unfolded — how their dreams might have taken shape,” the president said, also making mention of the terror attacks in Boston, San Bernardino and Orlando.

“Even as you’ve mourned, you’ve summoned the strength to carry on,” he continued.

“You’ve done your best to be a good neighbor, and a good friend, and a good citizen,” he added. “You remind us there’s nothing that Americans can’t overcome.”

Below are the sights and real, raw emotions of the memorial that just concluded. In another year, we will be right here, overcome with the same pain and grief but also another year to band together as a free world.
