Eminem began as a lyrical underground MC on the highly competitive Detroit battle circuit based around Maurice Malone’s Hip Hop Shop and the Shelter. After competing at the Skribble Jam and the Rap Olympics in 1997, he made the rounds recording features on indie Rap singles and albums before his demo landed in the lap of Dr. Dre. Eminem signed with Dr. Dre’s Aftermath/Interscope label, hooked up with Paul Rosenberg and after his breakout classic debut album “The Slim Shady LP” was released in February 1999, he never returned to the stratosphere. Eminem is presently one of the most commercially successful acts in music over the past 20+ years as well as one of the most respected pure lyricists.
