Fight to Save Tookie Intensifies

As we reported, Crip co-founder (and now, author of children’s books) Stanley “Tookie” Williams’ execution date has been set for December 13. Many supporters including high profile artists such as Snoop Dogg and Jamie Foxx (who played Tookie in a TV bio-pic) have been fighting to get Governor Arnold Shwarzenegger to grant him clemency.

Web sites have been launched in support of the former gang member like Savetookie.com where fans can write messages to the Governor and view Tookie‘s clemency petition.

The question remains: Will all of this help?

    Apparently, it just might.

“The Governor reviewed the material in the case this week and he decided the best route is a private clemency hearing, so he can hear directly from counsel,” said Margita Thompson, a spokesperson for the Governor.

Although there are many hopeful, some believe clemency should not be granted. For instance, Lora Owens, the stepmother of one of Tookie’s victims, Albert Owens doesn‘t feel it‘s fair to let him live.

“I think most of them (celebrities) are abusing their popularity and their access to the media,” she said to the Alternative Press. “It’s an agenda. If they looked at the facts, then they’d realize Williams has not done anything to deserve clemency.”

“Stanley Williams does not deserve this mercy,” said the District Attorney’s report to the governor. “In fact, despite the overwhelming nature of the evidence against him, and despite the non-existence of any credible defense, Stanley Williams has steadfastly refused to take any responsibility for the brutal, destructive, and murderous acts he committed. Without such responsibility, there can be no redemption, there can be no atonement, and there should be no mercy.”

Nevertheless, many have rallied in support of Williams. The Governor has agreed to come up with a decision on whether or not to grant Williams clemency by December 13.
