The Return of The Boondocks?

Fans of our popular Boondocks series may have to wait a lot longer than expected for new comic strips from the series.

Aaron McGruder, the creator of the strip, has yet to announce any plans of retirment or of the continuation of Boondocks.

According to Lee Salem, president of Universal Press Syndicate, McGruder was unsuccesful in marking a set date for the cartoon’s return.

    “His
Sunday strips needed to be in by mid-September to meet newspapers’
deadlines of publishing The Boondocks by the end of October. We had to
consider the newspapers currently running The Boondocks reruns and
expecting its return. It was unfair to keep them guessing any longer,”
    Salem said in a statement.
Still, he went on to assure that it is not certain whether McGruder will or won’t return with the strip. Salem also noted that there is optimism on his part.

    “This
situation is a far cry from the end of our relationship. Our hope is
that we can work with him in the future, either in newspapers or in
    different media
,” he said of McGruder, whom he went on to praise.

“Aaron is a brilliant cartoonist who brought a revolutionary voice to the comic pages,” he added.

The sentiment is shared by John Vivona, vice president of sales for Universal Press Syndicate.

“Aaron’s strip was revolutionary; it brought an art style and a voice to the comic pages that no
one had ever seen before. There is no direct replacement,”
    Vivona said via statement.

The Boondocks hit television sets through Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim 2 years ago. They have gone on to sign on for another season. Currently, The Boondocks Season 1 is in stores.
