Rap-A-Lot Records Partners With Fontana

Earlier today, news broke that Rap-A-Lot Records signed an exclusive distribution deal with Universal Music Group’ independent distribution division Fontana. Founded by James “J.Prince” Smith in 1986, Rap-A-Lot Records has put numerous Houston acts on to the national scene, including the Geto Boys, Bun B, Devin the Dude and many others. The announcement of this merger  comes just in time for the label’s 25th anniversary.

“I have been doing business with…Prince and Rap-A-Lot for a long time and it is an honor to welcome his entire team to Fontana,” said Ron Spaulding, president of Fontana. “James is a true music visionary and has established Rap-A-Lot as one of the great pioneers of southern hip-hop, a true original. And as they approach their well-earned milestone of 25 years in the industry, Fontana is thrilled to embrace their innovation, rich catalog and talented artists as we play a role in the next exciting chapter of their history.”

J.Prince echoed similar sentiments about the deal between Rap-A-Lot and Fontana. “I am excited about Rap-A-Lot Records’ new journey and the opportunity to work with Jim Urie [President & CEO, Universal Music Group Distribution] and Ron, two music executives that I have the utmost respect for. I believe in the Universal/Fontana system and I look forward to having the Rap-A-Lot brand be a part of the #1 music company.”

    8. While Rap a Lot records indeed has a rich history (as far as Black owned independence), in my opinion they short change their artists in terms of national exposure and support. Through the years the Rap A Lot roster has included the likes of Scarface, The Geto Boys, Devin the Dude, Yukmouth, 3-2, Big Mike, UGK, Tela, 5th Ward Boys, Gangsta Nip, Z-RO, Trae, ect…….the talent is undeniable and though most of the artists have experienced a certain modicum of regional success, Rap A Lot has never provided that extra push (like say a No Limit, Cash Money, Slip n Slide, Grand Hustle, ect. may provide). It’s as if Rap A Lot artists encounter some type of glass ceilmg. But like I said, just my opinion mane. I wish Prince and the Mafia continued success.

    9. I agree that j prince doesnt push his artists enough. You never see there videos or anything, other than the geto boys. The thing is though if they ever would have gotten real big like no limit then people would be tired of them and the label would be gone.
