Drake has gotten a lot of criticism for his pop friendly releases but according to him, he has been a backpack rapper from the start. In a recent interview with Los Angeles Times‘ Pop & Hiss, the former star of Degrassi spoke on the critiques he’s faced and his history with a backpack.
“I used to be a real backpack rapper. That was my thing,” he said. “I even say on this album, ‘I’m just trying to kick it like Ali Shaheed and Phife Dawg / Because people really hate when a backpack rapper get rich or start living that life, dog.'”
“‘Find Your Love‘ is the first time I’ve ever done something for the mainstream. ‘Successful 
‘ is a Hip Hop record. ‘Best I Ever Had‘ is a real hip-hop record. It’s a sample with some gritty drums. I’m rapping on there. It’s not a Pop record. Coin me as mainstream or Pop, man, I make real Hip Hop records.”
He continued, saying he is upset when people make these comments.
“That’s one of the things that gets under my skin: when people say I’m not ‘doing it for Hip Hop,'” he added. “Or that I’m not ‘as Hip Hop’ as so-and-so. ‘Cause there’s a lot of new kids that are coming out that are dope. Everybody makes it feel like they’re so much doper than me.”
Drake’s latest album, Thank Me Later, is out now.

I don’t know about J Cole being the next Nas, J Cole is a dope emcee though. But I do agree that the only reason why I have as much respect for Drake as I do is because I have his first couple of mixtapes (that first track on comeback season he destroys lyrically and room for improvement is just awesome). If I had just heard So Far Gone and then his actual album I wouldn’t like him as much. So Far Gone is just good to me, not great…you see potential even there “The Calm”, “Uptown”, & “Say What’s Real”. Thank Me Later has some good tracks – Show Me A Good Time & Light Up in particular but it just doesn’t do it for me like his mixtapes, particularly the first two.

He aint no Jay Z..His not going to appeal to everyone. He flow is good..no great. His content is decent simply because he gets a little repetitive at times. I think he will sell well but he wont be a solid rap artist like say Kanye who you know is gonna go at least gold on every album. Drake and Wayne styles are too similiar for them to both be together rapping is a conflict of interest. It feels kinda like its either Wayne coming out with new shit or Drake never both. They’ve gotta share the “buzz”. Listen, people get this confused all of the time. Keep in mind that this is coming from a straight up and down underground Hip-Hop head that listens to Canibus and Immortal Technique, and can list 100 MC’s off the dome that are better than Lil Wayne: Making a mainstream song does not make you a bad artist. So what if you make a song that gets radio airplay. If it’s a catchy tune that’s not ignorant, dumbed down, or a complete mockery of what music is supposed to be, there’s nothing wrong with it. “Superstar” and “Kick/Push” by Lupe Fiasco are mainstream songs. there is nothing wrong with those songs at all. You can tell that cognitive thought actually went into their creation. “Pop” and “Mainstream” is not synonymous with “Bad Music”…it just seems like nowadays the majority of the stuff that goes mainstream is just terrible. The radio used to be good at one point…now it’s just so bad that I feel like my ears are burning every time I turn on a urban radio station. I think that’s why people automatically associate “pop and Mainstream” with “Bad music”.

I just thought that some of the “Niggas and Bitches” talk in the song was extremely forced and unneccesary, and the song would’ve been better off without it. I only think that you’re selling out as an artist if you’re capable of making good music, and you know what good music is, but you compromise your morals and integrity as an artist just to get a hit…and you make shitty music. That’s the only problem I have. I have no problem with Drake making mainstream music as long as you can see a thoughtful effort was put into creating the song.
