For years, Will Smith has had success at the box office. Coming off a triumphant release of his son’s Karate Kid and the announcement of his forthcoming Men in Black III film, he and his partners, James Lassiter and Ken Stovitz at Overbrook Entertainment, are working for Sony on a biopic about Dr. S. Allen Counter, an African-American neuroscience professor and explorer. The film will also feature Debbie Allen as its producer and Farhad Safinia as the script writer, according to a report from Variety.
Dr. Counter and Smith have worked together in the past for Haiti relief efforts. While Will Smith’s known for his acting, he is only attached to the project as a producer for now, with no word as of yet, regarding the actors set to star in the film.
Counter is known for his work with rain forest descendants of the 17th and 18th century slaves from Africa. He’s traveled throughout the world on scientific missions and has even created a documentary, I Shall Moulder Before I Shall Be Taken. Aside from this, he found descendants of Africa in the Andes in 1993 and this led to another doc, Lost Africans in the Andes. In addition, he has written “North Pole Legacy: Black, White and Eskimo” and “I Sought My Brother: An Afro-American Reunion.”
Currently, Dr. Counter is a professor of neurology at Harvard Medical School and is the director of the Harvard University’s Harvard Foundation.
