Q-Tip Not in Support of A Tribe Called Quest Documentary

Many fans have been excited about, Beats, Rhymes & Life: The Travels of A Tribe Called Quest, an upcoming documentary about the group. However, Q-Tip recently voiced his lack of support for the project and explained why The Tribe had disagreements with the team behind the making of the project, which was directed by actor Michael Rapaport.

I am not in support of the a tribe called quest documentary.less than a minute ago via Twitter for BlackBerry®

He went on to note that he feels “the filmmaker should respect the band enough to honor our request regarding the film.” It seems the project was made with the crew’s consent and each member of Tribe appears in it, along with other emcees who share their views on the group’s legacy.

The documentary will premiere at next month’s Sundance Film Festival.

    1. Why don’t you fuckin’ explain yourself instead of just tweeting “I don’t support it.” If you gotta good reason, then fair enough…but you gotta have some sorta explanation. Is it just me, or does tip seem like kind of a bitch nigga sometimes?

      1. I agree. he needs to explain why he hogged the mic and let phife only rhyme on 2 songs from their debut album.

      2. Tip is always on some shit. I remember when ATCQ came to Japan back when he went solo and he didn’t even show up for the show. That was about 10 years ago and low and behold he’s being an asshole and not giving the fans that made him popular what we deserve. I will love the group but Tip comes off as an asshole for real.

    2. ahahahaha, Tip is just mad that fans are finally going to find out the group broke up because of his selfish ass. Howcome it’s only Abstract the Douche that’s complaining?

Hey Tip! If the films make you look like a douche bag, it’s probably because you are one.

    3. The hush is about a possible law suit,. he cant say anything , id love to know what his issue is , people in the hip hop community like rappaprt hes been a huge fan.

    4. ATCQ is my favorite group.

Tip be on something at times. Why would you do the film and then dont support it?

People love the Tribe and really want to cherish the good times. I know I do. With all the fighting, I don’t think anybody really cared about it. The fighting did have an effect on the music, but also the Jiggy era and the change in the Hip Hop fan had an effect on their music too.

This documentary will be right there along with the classic albums, Priceless.

    5. Yo just watched the trailer. I def wanna check this shit out! Looks like Tip gonna be the bad guy why the group split up! His flow still SAF tho!

      1. exactly. tip is notorious for being the complaining & stubborn ” if i dont get my way then i dont wanna be apart of it ” asshole. Hes definitely on his own dick and up his own ass.

He definitely should explain why he doesnt support the documentary.

    6. dont really understand tip at all. i think all of the tribes fans would love to see this, and qtip seems to have to be a complete bitch about anything regarding ATCQ.

    7. Actually all of the group members are not supporting it. Phife spoke out as well. Jarobie, and Ali shaheed did recently too. Google it

    8. Not a good look for Tip…saw the trailer and if he’s half the asshole it looks like, no wonder he’s against it..a damn shame too, as ATCQ is one of my all-time favorite groups of ANY genre…

    9. God damn it, can’t we just enjoy a documentary and learn behind-the-scenes about one of our favorite hip-hop groups without a bunch of drama behind it? And I’m not sure I agree with him about honoring the group’s requests because the shit is like journalism, if somebody wants to tell us the true story and Tribe wants to hide it then fuck them. I need to know exactly what the issues are to know if this shit is justified but I’m skeptical.

      1. There is a purpose behind the drama. It raises questions, controversy & conversation. Which equates to free publicity for the documentary.

    10. Uhhh..He didn’t explain anything…also, I’m sure Tip noticed this bastard following him around for 2 YEARS with a camera!! Now all of the sudden he’s against the documentary..Shenanigans!!!!

    11. yall sound like real fans bitches… bet none of u ever bought a atcq album. all u can do is complaing about free shit

    12. HHDX STAFF: Why don’t you try to follow up on this story? I mean this is extremely frustrating to not be offered any REASONS for Tip’s anger.
Like most other people on here I’m just assuming that he’s unsatisfied with the way he ended up looking in the final cut. Too much truth for him to take perhaps? But maybe he has a point here–maybe Rapaport DID edit the film in a way that isn’t entirely truthful. Either way, the fans want to know. SO FOLLOW UP ON THIS STORY! You’re one of the most respected hip hop news sites online, so GO TO THE Q-TIP HIMSELF!

    13. i thought it was beats rhymes and fights. i think this type of thing happens often when a celebrity sees the final product and realizes that he acted like a dick in some of the scenes. Not saying thats what happened though. Im a huge q tip and tribe fan

    14. Until further information comes out about this im just gonna take it is the film shows Q-Tip for what he really is. What Q-Tip is a shady character been said that long ago.
