The new semester at Rice University may have just begun, but the experimental course taught by Religious Studies Professor Dr. Anthony Pinn and HERE distinguished lecturer/rapper Bun B is looking to be an early success.
According to My Fox Houston, the class size for their “Religion & Hip Hop Culture” course has doubled to 250 students since the beginning of the semester. And while the increase in attention may be because of Bun B’s celebrity status, the Port Author native sees this as a chance to teach tomorrow’s generation a valuable lesson in cultural principles. “This is the perfect opportunity for 1: to bridge the gaps between religion and hip hop. 2: alter the perception of Hip Hop in the community and 3: enlighten people here on Rice University’s grounds,” he said.
In other news, Los Angeles rapper Ice Cube will be performing a free concert as part of the 2010/2011 Winter Dew Tour on February 11.
In its third annual season, the Winter Dew Tour features the nations’ best snowboarders and skiers competing for gold and glory, with the championship round and other festivities taking place over the course of a weekend (Feb. 10-13) at the Snowbasin Resort in Ogden, Utah.
Past Winter Dew Tour performers include Common and The Cool Kids.
I’m not suprised. If I went to Rice University I would be honored to be in his class.
dick riding. why would you take this? to jack off to bun b’s outrageously smooth head?
Why Is His Smooth Head Outrageous?
Lol your a dumb faggot shady, you spend your time on a hip hop site, and dont understand why someone would want to be in Bun B’s Class oppose to an General Liberal with professor PHD Jon Doe, your an idiot
I have to say that Bun B is possibly the rapper I have the most respect for. He is extremely intelligent and has overcome so much adversity. Those 250 people are very lucky.
Jahorse,
Share with us some more information about his extreme intelligence. Is he a member of MENSA? Do you know his IQ? Does he have a university education?
I am quite curious and willing to be humbled by any response that can be supported.
jut cause this boule nigga teachin a class, don’t mean he’s intelligent. Another diversion for them sucka ass college kids to think they making something of themselves… what this nigga gonna teach them? To keep it trill, c’mon!! lol This is wack, bun stick to rappin and living off of pimp c’s legacy nigga, you aint no college professor.

If my I had a kid going to rice I would be pissed if they wanted to take this joke of a class.
As much as people pay to go to that school there shouldnt be any bullshit classes like this one.
what job is your degree in hiphop going to get you? official hiphop cd stocker at bestbuy
bhahahahah dude that best buy cd stocker shit had me cracking up. but yea dude agreed shit is stupid waste of money class. rice is just getting some extra cash knowing kids will take a class if it’s taught by someone famous.
You guys do know some schools offer courses in bird watching right? They are called “elective courses” for a reason, if you were going to Rice, you could elect not to take the course. Live and let live. On another note my friend Eddie makes 75k “stacking CD’s” in a recession with no college degree I might add.
This class is a must-take for rappin’ pastors.
white jesus? yeah ok… slave master re lie gion
man when you get older, you get wiser. well that’s if you had sense from the get-go. big ups to bun b and cube boss thugs!
B BUM JUST KEEP IT REAL
scary shit, please keep religion and hip hop seperate smh, we should be trying to bridge philosophy and hip hop not religion and hip hop
They are all one in the same.
if anybody considered FAMOUS who should be teaching a class about religion in relation to rap is NAS….. but if you were trying to have this class be serious just get an educated CHRISTIAN rapper…. if anybody pays for this class they have no clue..
See this comment really shows your intelligence. Bun B has as much intellect to offer as Nas does, you dont know this man comprehension of the rap game along with the ties to religious studies. He could be a genius on this subject so stf up man in stay in your lane remember this its a reason why Nas isnt doing this. Maybe just Maybe he is not in the right frame of mind to really be teaching inquisitive individuals( Milk shake bringing him to the yard…. really wife her)
Bun B is every bit as smart at nas…if you really listen to bun youll know hes one of the most intelligent rappers ever
Bun get yo gettooo ass back in d studio and put the shit down like u n chad once did please. Miss yo nigga, u still got it!
It’s interesting to see some of these comments complaining about the topic of the course and some sort of waste of money. Given the hilarity of most of them, it sounds like I’m just reading the rants of some junior college or technical school all stars or something. Rice is a prestigious university. Given that I know a little something about prestigious universities (especially those in the East), paying by course credit isn’t really how it works around there anymore. With no disrespect to junior college or small public schools or whatever, I respect those who yearn to be educated, I simply strive to correct you on this egregious assumption (To assume is to make an A-S-S out of you, not me…).
Furthermore, if you go to a four year university, like Rice and other prestigious colleges, there are often learning requirements outside of the general major one may pursue, such as learning about civilizations, ethical inquiries, science & technology, etc. If someone wants to take a little bit of a load off of their tough semester (especially if they’re a pre-med or engineering student), I do not see why taking a class that may attract their interest, or help boost their GPA, is such a bad idea. If someone’s main focus is even religion or religious philosophy, taking this course broadens the horizon of their studies, a pursuit that others should acknowledge as one step closer to beginning to understand another culture. Plus, given Rice’s reputation among other prestigious schools as being along the lines of Brown University, yet of a stranger composition, I can completely understand the popularity of the course.
Finally, I’m pretty sure you won’t find too many potential rap artists at Rice who are trying to catch Bun B’s attention…artists like J Cole are rare, and they are even rarer at colleges like this. There are many socioeconomic and cultural factors/ assumptions as to why, but that’s the realistic point.
Stay classy, HipHopDX. Or at least try.
lol true dat ma nigga.
yeah man, honestly, I go to university, but I don’t get oppertunities like this. If I was in his class I would be like HOLD UP A MINUTE MA NIGGA, PUt on these head phones, peep this, Next thing you know we’d be in the studio sippin sizzurp mackin hoes makin that raw whipapel shiet in ur speakers ya hurrrrr J cole right hur ma niggga
*Throws the troll a coin*
In this country way too much time is spent critiquing the lives of others and not the life of your own.
I see these haters on here as usual. Not surprised 250 students signed up for that class. I wish I attended Rice Univ. I would have signed up for that class.
Alot of Hate comin from these Commodes,”Whites”, I call you commodes cause y’all full of Sh!t.Sum of U N!ggaz are too.Don’t know anything about Mr. Freeman do ya thang Big Homie. G.B. 4Life, long live tha Pimp!!!
Why is everybody hating on this Bun B teaching thing. Any one who would pass up an opportunity to be in Bun B’s class is a dumbass. I understand he’s not going to teach my biology or chemistry. and How is it a waste of money, you have to take liberals anyway, so I’d rather take a class with bun b than take sociology. And half of you dumbasses chirpin don’t even know how to brush your own teeth. Acting like what’s bun B gonna teach me, you probably don’t pay attention in school anyway if you even go to school. So get the dicks out of your ass and relax.
