It has been a rough week for Lupe Fiasco. His long-awaited Lasers leaked online and was met with a lot of negative reviews, something which Lu has already addressed. In an interview with Kevin W. Reese from Hot 97, Lupe focused on the future.
When asked where he sees himself in five years, Lupe had a surprising answer. “Hopefully I’ll be out of my traditional record deal, the record deal I’m in right now. Probably living in Africa somewhere, making rock music,” he said. When pressed if he was serious Lupe laughed and said, “Who knows man? Who knows? I don’t know.”
The Chi-Town emcee then elaborated on his wish to be free of Atlantic Records. “Yeah, yeah. I would rather be independent, I would take that,” he said, before adding that independence isn’t the easy way out. “Independent comes with its own set of consequences, so that takes preparation. The same way you prepare to come into a record deal, you need to prepare to come into an indie situation because there is a lot of things you’re going to lose taking that route.”
Reese suggested he could just get on iTunes and promote through the blogs, Lupe wasn’t so sure. “Yeah you could, you could. But I’m banned from half the Hip Hop blogs on the Internet (laughs),” he said, referring to his backlash against blogs for leaking his songs. “I confronted them, I called them out. They felt I confronted them in a very physical way, which I did not.”
Just go independent. All your fans have had enough of Atlantic’s meddling. Indie artists may not have the marketing and sales edge but at least they have control over what they release.
I refer hhdx readers to an Immortal Technique song in regards to this.

he is independant….hes the owner or CEO of 1st and 15th.thats his shit
And Atlantic is the parent to his record label. So Atlantic has the final say so on anything he tries to put out.
I know this is irrelevant to this current conversation , but can anyone tell me whatever happened to murda mook?
WAHHHHHHHHH
MAKE A BEAT, SPIT, PUT IT OUT.
OH WAAAAIT, WE NEED A DELUXE CD, T-SHIRT, MAGNET, AND COFFEE MUG ANDD POSTERS FOR ANYTHING TO BE RELEASED.
OMG ATLANTIC IS SO BAD
RHIANNA DONT SEE TO BE DOIN SO BAD LOL!!
funny how alot of people only turn to africa and god’s in times of distress and spiritual turmoil. reminds of nas’s corny ass character in belly. america has rejected us …let’s go to africa. lol. its sad how people treat africa like that nerdy friend they treated bad and then only turn to them for your other friends dont want you no more and u need help.
like the ending of 2012. Suddenly africa dont seem so bad huh. We love black people now. lmao
this nigga a loser, fuck africa nigga
Damn your ignorant
Its sad how black people can say worse shit about themselves than other races.
@Anon,I hate those people so much lol.
now how the fuck u know he’s black?
@saywha? so tru- tons of white people go on hip hop blogs and say mad disrespectful shit
I would personally love to see him on GOOD music, seems like he would fit in perfect there but it never works like that I guess.
thats exactly where he need 2 go, and put out that CRS album
i was thinking the same thing. and you know what? kanye will probably sign him to GOOD music the moment Lupe leaves atlantic.
I cant stand it when rappers refer to ‘Africa’. Africa’s a fuckin massive continent… does he mean he’s moving to Egypt or Swaziland? Big difference.
word
probably west africa being his parents are from there.
what he needs to do it drop that mixtape already. Enemy of the State is probably my favorite mixtape of all times and it was only like 25 seconds long. And then in close second is the drought 3
Understandable but africa no canida maybe, london…rich do that.

LUPE THE KILLA AKA LUPE THE GOAT
peace
I like listening to artist interviews. You kinda get an insight as to how happy they are with their record label and in-turn try not to make the same mistakes.
Be on the lookout for my first single featuring KILLAH PRIEST & TRAI KENNEDI droppin’ 4/20

LOL
^^^^^^yeah what he said^^^^
support real hip-hop cop lasers march 8th! pick up shaolin vs wu-tang while youre at it!
Done.
Im cop anything LUPE puts out. Go support him buy LASERS, GREATEST STORY EVER TOLD, SHaolin vs Wu-Tang, Free Agent
Word. Support music people. If you like more than 3 songs. Support the album, buy something other than clothes or weed, and make sure the people who keep it real are rewarded.
No disrespect meant to Lupe, but there’s no need to blame Atlantic or anyone else when he’s just not that appealing to people who actually buy music. He’s a great artist, but unfortunately you have to have appeal enough to sell your material for a record company to support you. It is what it is.
Lasers isn’t nearly as bad as Lupe or others are making it out to be, but it’s disappointing what Atlantic did to this record. Songs like All Black Everything, Words I Never Said, and Beautiful Lasers are glimpses of what this album could’ve and would’ve been without Atlantic Records, and it’s a shame we never got to hear Lasers like it should’ve been heard.
Lupe proved on The Show Goes On that he can make catchy, yet lyrically great songs, but some of the pop-sounding songs are disappointing. I hope Lupe goes independent. I know he probably won’t sell as well, but I want to hear the real Lupe Fiasco.
Record companies like Atlantic are ruining music, across all genres, nowadays. CEOs who know nothing about music are basically making the music now, all to make cash.
i hope we dont have to hear about him crying over shit everyday until his album comes out, then he will cry some more to get us to buy his album out of pity
Roc-A-Fella or GOOD Music is where he needs to be if he doesn’t want to go indie.
why is like africa turning into zion, shits fucked up over there man nad you go there with all your money to find peace, shits exploiting those who are living in extreme poverty everyday so no matter how much lupe thinks he is with the people he is still a foreigner over there, with all that money keeping to himself
ignorance is bliss.you watch too match tv
fuck tv son, you think ima get this smart off them lying as elites, open a book
Jaystone, how about you open a book you fucking ignorant idiot? There are only a few places in Africa that are moderately stable and peaceful – Namibia, South Africa, Mozambique.. Everything else is a powder keg.
black people in america think they have alot in common with black in africa. Actually the only thing blacks people in africa and america have in common is skin color. Africa is almost all 3rd world countries. ghettos in america would be a paradise in africa. I would love to see a black person from USA go to africa and try to fit in and live. Nas seems to think he can and i guess lupe does too. Funny thing is they cant talk to 95% of the people since they can only speak english.
LASERS- Lupe’s Awful Songs Equal Radio Spins. FREE LUPE
hahah!
FREE LUPE!!!
..good 1, that’s a T-Shirt right there
Sounds like the same thing with Chappelle. Comedy central wanted to write season 3 so he goes to Africa. Maybe Africa is the place to go when a black man is stressed out.
Lupe should have made this decision before releasing a shit album. Take your lyrics, switch em up a bit to avoid a lawsuit, get an indie producer, of which there are tons of great ones, and basically remake Lasers as something else, something it was meant to be from the beginning.
totally agree with you man
Yep….If I knew Lasers was gonna be like this I would have preferred it to not be released at all.
There’s an interview of Lupe in this blog expressing how he hated Lasers. He actually dumbed it down in a lyrical and production way because Atlantic Records wanted it like that. He’s been trying to come with an agreement with the record label and since everyone fought so hard for Lasers to come out, he said to himself “Oh wells, why not? Fans been wanting this to come out for a long time.” He hated the agreements because he didn’t even write all those songs, the label did and even the label told them “Show goes on” would be the first single. He feels happy because he got what us fans wanted but hates it at the same time due to the process of it.
Only one problem with that dude.. Did you not hear Lupe say that he’s in a contract with Atlantic?. He can’t just decide, “Well I don’t like Atlantic anymore so I’m gonna leave..”
I know Anonymous but he’s been fighting that label since he released The Cool. He would of just kept it going and going, some mixtapes here and there but what made him agree is the petition that us fans created. Gotta give Lupe a break here since he thought about us and what we wanted. He did it for us fans even if it meant agreeing with the label.
Promoting??? Nowadays you don’t need a record label. Lupe you got Twitter, FaceBook, Myspace, the internet, Yahoo, HipHopDX lol… The Word will get out and I will buy your album as long as it’s not in connection with Atlantic
the first two tracks are cool then i was like wtf is this?? you can really feel the label in the album not lupe….. the three bonus tracks are better than the entire album wtf….. oh and he should have put SLR on it
You can really feel the label in the album…that’s true bro.
“Till I Get There” is a good song tho. that’s number 3
Co-sign. I love SLR.
tell me what you think of my artist
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qE5HZKxZ41A
hey guys…don’t trip off of much of anything Lupe says right now…you know you GUYS hurt his feelings by not blogging positive accolades for losers…oh i mean lasers…yes mr. fiasco is a great talent but he is also a SENSITIVE DOUCHE…come on son…no one’s moving to Africa to make rock music…he’s just pulling his fans proverbial chains…don’t listen to much to Lupe says for awhile…& don’t be suprised if he tries to pull ‘public stunts’ (ex. i’m quitting rap>>>sound familiar?), or say more outrageous thingz to get a rise from his fans & the label (in an attempt for them to cut his contract ties sooner)…these SENSITIVE-SELF-ABSORBED-ARTIST-TYPES CAN BE SOOOOO PREDICTABLE
lol why don’t we just call him Lauryn Hill
lost his fucking mind
he lyrically murdered lasers, he dumbed it down for any idiot to get and when they go it they didnt like it cause it speaks the truth…
Co-fucking-sign… He murdered that shit and spoke truth to power. It was ok when he was over niggas heads, cause they couldn’t understand what he was talking about.
I think the problem is that he sounds sick of hip-hop music. Lyrically, he’s not as engaging as he was before. His album sputtered just a chockful of electro/splint rock music, and All Black Everything stood as the only meager attempt to address Hip-Hop flavour. It’s not like he hasn’t done the electro-rock thing before, looking back at The Cool, but the passion isn’t there anymore.
It’s pretty bad though. I don’t want to see him make rock music, because it’ll be as terrible as it sounds.
“I confronted them, I called them out. They felt I confronted them in a very physical way, which I did not.”
Nah, right? lol
go ahead and do it chump. it’ll be just like NaS at the end of belly.
This is just proof of the strength of Lupe’s fan base considering the state of hip hop and his apparent “messiah” image created by his fans…..Lupe is talented but I for one will not just buy the whole “blame Atlantic” shit. Labels can be bitchy but I just have to think he could have done more to improve the quality of the music he made. He might have been forced to go radio, but at least give us good songs. No excuse for that.
Lupe is trying to get kicked out. HAHAHAHA
lyrically the album was really really great, but I feel like with the label wanting him to be more main stream his lyrics were drowned out with a hot beat and features for a hot chorus, you kind had to really channel in and listen to the lyrics, if you didn’t you would get caught just bobbin ur head and not paying attention…maybe thats what atlantic wanted I don’t kno
i’m listening to LASERS right now.first time i hated it,now i’m feeling it.Tomorrow who knows…it’s all about the enviroment created in your mind.IT’S A GREAT ALBUM that everybody loves to tear down.i mean just listening to it i feel like a super critic!!
I kinda blame lupe,i think he set the album up to fail………he knows what it sounds like he created it!but made no attempt to sell it to the public and critics alike.and what is he thinking of appearing so sensitive to critics?all the more sweeter to tear your a@S up brother.i’m on song 7 now…you can either really hate this album or really love it.THE QUESTION IS WHO DID YOU MAKE THE ALBUM FOR?a critic might say not for the hood…but i can see that smart 12year old girl in the hood in it.
Tisk tisk
lol @ all the idiots who actually went out and bought lasers. lupe has gone off the deep end. what’s with these rappers making rock albums? wanye’s was a piece of shit, im sure if cudi makes one it will be a piece of shit, and lupe ehhhh
Lupe already has an album out with his band (Japanese Cartoon) and the shit is legit good music not like Lil Wayne’z garbage experiment. Lupe was listening to Rock b4 Hip Hop. Remember after he made Food&Liquor he said he wanted to stop making Hip Hop because of all the politics? Can’t blame him now. Rock oN Lupe! lol
lupe lyrically is one of the best and lasers is a good album
this fool needs to just go to G.O.O.D. music
that would solve all his problems
he shud evolve it into blues hip hop instead of rock
