O.C. Reveals That He Attempted To Get Ice Cube On “Word…Life” Album

Veteran Brooklyn, New York emcee O.C. just released his collaborative album with Detroit, Michigan producer Apollo Brown, Trophies. In a recent interview with KevinNottingham.com. the D.I.T.C. member spoke candidly about his 1994 debut album, Word…Life. The Wild Pitch Records effort featured Organized Konfusion’s Pharoahe Monch and Prince Po, but according to O, it very nearly had another legendary lyricst guest appearance.

Looking back at the making of Word…Life, O.C. revealed, “I even had [conversations with] Ice Cube [about appearing]…they got at the label or the label got at him about a record called, “Constables” and I think Cube wanted 40 or 50 grand. At that time, he was on the, ‘I’m proud/Black’ movement.” O.C. alluded that his independent label at the time considered the royalty too high. “It would’ve been smart for [Wild Pitch/EMI Records] to pay him that money ’cause it would’ve took us somewhere else.”

“Constables” remained a solo track, produced by Organized Konfusion on Word…Life.

    1. Police be clocking me…

Damn, I wonder how Cube would’ve sounded over that beat. Subject of the song was perfect for him. But yeah, album still came out great and OC held it down by himself. Remember when dudes used to do that?

*Organized Konfusion wasn’t really featured. Prince Poetry has a few lines on “No Main Topic”, but that was it.

    2. HEEELL Y EEEZZZ NIKKKAS

    3. O.C. easily one of the most underrated MC’s of all time. Word…Life and Jewelz were fucking brilliant albums. I am yet to check out his collaboration with Apollo Brown though but I’ve only heard good things about it.

    4. Damn, 40-50 grand??? I don’t even think Wu-Tang’s “Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)” cost that much to produce, and it still ended up being a very popular classic with a platinum plaque. “Word…Life” was another true classic, yet unknown and unpopular outside of hip-hop and very very underrated, to the point that the album, I think, has yet to ship over 300,000 copies as of today. IMO, paying that much for Ice Cube to appear in it would probably be pretty ridiculous. Even if that album gained popularity due to Cube’s appearance, I’m not really sure that paying over $40k would be worth it.

Either way, “Word…Life” is a pure essential classic. My favorite hip-hop album of all time.

      1. Co-sign. There would have been no sure way of knowing the song would have helped his career long term. Cube is a legend but is now doing a lot of disney films to pay the bills, so he had foresight on hip hop not sellng in the future.

      2. Fuck you talking about doing Disney movies to pay the bills? He doesn’t need to be doing those movies, he’s doing it for the money, he’s 40 now, making money about being a G ain’t going to sell, but them movies are making him millions.

    5. You’re paying for someone else’s established fan-base, and Cube had a huge one at that point. This would’ve changed a lot about dude’s future.

      1. Bitch that’s how we do it on HHDX if you can’t handle then get the shit outta here and recognize don’t be crying like “y’all niggas too recless” we ain’t finna hear that shit goddamnit

      2. As soon as sohh changed their forum all the Alf Gang trolls changed their name and came to DX. Bunch of faggots with no lives.

    6. O.C is one of the most underrated dudes in the game all time. That Word…life album is a must have if you a hip hop head.I used to have Times up and Ma Dukes on repeat back in the day.Another gem is that primo joint My World..That was a banger. He just fucked up signing to Wild Pitch who stayed undercutting their artists with Budget restraints and promotion..

    7. anybody in their right mind knew wild pitch was cheap as fucc. primo and guru talked about it,and they was smart to get the hell off that label, mc serch was cheap bastard to yell
