Nas Defends “Django Unchained,” Calls Quentin Tarantino “One Of The Greatest Filmmakers”

Over the past few weeks, famed director Quentin Tarantino has raised the ire of critics and filmmakers alike over the excessive use of the n-word in his latest picture Django Unchained. However, in a recent interview with MTV, one of Hip Hop’s finest has come to the director’s defense.

The legendary Nas discussed the controversy surrounding the film, saying that the film is truthful to its Southern antebellum setting in the usage of such harsh language. He also said that Tarantino is one of this generation’s greatest filmmakers and deserves the right to express his art anyway he sees fit.

“A movie about slavery and you don’t hear the n-word? That don’t make any sense,” he said. “I didn’t see what the big fuss was about. It’s a movie, movies by [Tarantino], why should we be surprised if the movie is raw? He’s one of the greatest filmmakers of our generation, and we don’t go there to see anything less than rawness, so if it’s gonna be language or goriness…he’s an artist, and artists have to express themselves and that’s just what he’s doing.”

Despite the controversy, Django Unchained has been nominated for five Academy Awards, including Best Picture. Check out the full interview below.

    1. Nas is 100% right, you cant have a movie about slavery and not have it inaccurate. I dont know why anyone of intelligence would expect nas to not support it. People in the south are some shitty ass people. People in the north at least are ignorant to your face and arent as fake, people in the south with show u how nice they want to be but the minute u walk out they throw racial slurs behind your back.

    2. Nas is the man. Of course, he also defended pretty blonde Gwyneth Paltrow when she tweeted about “n____ in paris for real!” a while back, lol..

    3. People like Nas who used to stand up for Blackness are tired and don’t want to be looked at as racist. I get it. Because of gentrification and have white friends, black people don’t look at racial issues. In this case, Quentin is a good filmmaker, but don’t make a comedic sphagetti western with a slavery backdrop. It’s disrespectful. It’s disrespectful because we not tackling the issue in a respectful way, but sugarcoating with a western. How about making a serious movie about slavery without the jokes and western cowboy? Do you think the Jews would like it if Hollywood made a comedic holocaust movie? NO! But they make Schindler’s List then Inglorious Bastard which did not have the jews being called names. I liked the movie, but l can see where spike is coming from. I’m surprised people like dick Gregory and Nas don’t see it.

      1. There were plenty of derogatory comments and name calling of jews in Inglorious Bastards. Did you not see the movie or something?

      2. A bunch of idiots running their mouths and don’t even understand what he is trying to say. I understood what he was saying about Spike lee. Think! It’s not illegal yet.

      3. No. Just no. Everyone is hopping on the Spike Lee train of thought (who admittedly has NOT EVEN SEEN the film) to say stupid shit like, “Slavery was not a spaghetti western.”

No shit. Watching the movie, slavery is depcited as fucking horrible. Slaves aren’t in that bitch having fun. It’s certainly one of the rawest depcitions put on film. It was stomach churning in parts, and that’s not even worse than what ACTUALLY HAPPENED. People are shocked by Tarantino blending different ideas: the comedic and the grotesque? The eloquent and the ultra-violent?

“Haven’t you seen annny of my moooovies?!?!” -Chapelle as Sam Jackson

I mean, fuck guys. GO see the film before you form an opinion. If you don’t like, write your own shit and make sure it doesn’t suck. Never thought I’d see the day when niggas badmouth a movie about a SLAVE KILLING THE FUCK OUT OF SLAVE MASTERS.

      4. How about making a serious movie about slavery without the jokes and western cowboy?

        THIS RIGHT HERE

& THIS Y “THEY” DON’T LIKE THE MOVIE

      5. buddy, i seen schindler’s list and that word was used mad times in the film. that movie was very graphic. it changed my view on humanity. period

      1. he is simply answering a question… Doing interviews is part of the job as an artist.

MTV is the one who wants attention and hits/views on their website (which is their job) so they ask a relevant question that has some sort of controversy behind it. And it works, as you can see HipHopDX posts it (which is their job) and you’re opening the page + commenting so it means its working.

Everyone is just doing their job.. I don’t know what it’s called when you critique someone for simply doing their job. Wait ah yes! “Hating” be thy word.

    4. The question that should be asked is why do you need to use a hot button word 100 times in a movie? Even Leo Decaprio had a problem saying it, so that should say something here. I think QT gets lost in the process of making these movies to a point where he doesn’t realize when it stops being entertaining and starts being offensive.

      1. “A movie about slavery and you don’t hear the n-word? That don’t make any sense”

        ^ this obviously escapes you

So what politically correct word would you like to have heard instead of the true one?

    5. Spike was right but Nas was more logical! People really should defend whats true to them. I don’t see anything wrong with the dialogue but saying F*ck Spike Lee is dumb.

    6. HALF OF THE PEOPLE WHO ARE COMPLAINING ABOUT N WORD IN THE MOVIE LISTENS ALL DAY TO VARIOUS HIP HOP SONGS FULL OF “NIGGA”, IN SOME OF THEM THEY EVEN SAY IT MORE OFTEN THAN THE ENTIRE MOVIE CONTAINS. SPIKE IS SHITTY OLD DUMBASS WITH NOTHING BETTER TO WORK ON THAN TALKING SHIT ABOUT OTHER’S WORK, HE IS STUPID. IF TARANTINE WAS BLACK, IT WOULD BE ALL OKAY?

WHO IS “GIVING” THE RIGHT TO SAY NIGGA ANYWAY? NEXT TIME I SAY NIGGA I SHOULD ASK SPIKE LEE FIRST IF IT AIN’T “RACIST” OR “DISRESPECTFUL”, THE ONLY RACIST AND DISRESPECTFUL PERSON IS SPIKE LEE HIMSELF.

NAS IS RIGHT, ONE OF THE BEST RAPPERS ALIVE, EVEN ONE OF THE BEST MOVIE CRITICS ALIVE.

    7. “So what politically correct word would you like to have heard instead of the true one?”

How about just plain old dialogue lol Would you like the movie less if it only had the word said 5 times as opposed to 100?

      1. Honestly…yeah. This is a raw, ultraviolent film that spends a two and a half hour running time depicting relationships between blacks and whites in the most racist state in the most racist period in history. If Tarantino only used the word 5x in the film I would call him a bitch and call the film weak. Not because I love hearing the word, but because the film was ready to get into the serious racial oppression of THAT time but backing down from the bullshit political correctness of THIS time.

    8. I won’t knock the movie as I have not seen it and someone seems to have posted a good explanation for the usage of the word although even then, you can use it more than you need to. However, we can’t deny QT has an obsession with the word and their has to be something behind it. Not calling him racist, just saying.

    9. “If Tarantino only used the word 5x in the film”

That’s your opinion, but honestly that’s sad. I’m not usually big on censoring movies, but you shouldn’t need to litter your screenplay with 100 uses of the word. After about the 10th uttering, I’m pretty sure most people would get the point. After awhile it becomes just about shock value.

      1. Whatever topic, you know everything about it.

You know all of this from your internet connection but if you truly had all of this information, why don’t you have your OWN website instead of coming here, and have the internet gather this info from YOU?

    11. I’m not sure you’re aware this is 2013, not 1992. And what was all that dribble you were typing? Sounds like you were taking a magic carpet ride with the help of some special narcotics lol Let’s face it. I don’t take you seriously. You’re a caps lock obsessed goon who has severe delusions of grandeur. The slick in his own mind wanna be who has more luck installing a fire wall than lining up a date.
