Sugar Hill Records released some of the most important Hip Hop ever put to record. The New Jersey-based label most notably released “Rapper’s Delight” by the Sugarhill Gang in 1979, signifying one of Hip Hop’s first national hits. The label, founded by Joe and Sylvia Robinson, would go on to release seminal music from Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five, Spoonie Gee, Treacherous Three and others.
The label was sold to MCA Records in 1986, and subsequently ceased releasing new music. However, the Robinson family has retained ownership of the music and publishing. Today, it was announced by Billboard Biz, that Universal Music Publishing will now administer all of Sugar Hill Records’ catalog
“My brothers and I are really excited about the opportunity of working with [Chairman & CEO of Universal Music Publishing Group Zach Horowitz], Evan Lamberg, and the entire UMG family,” said Sylvia’s son Joey Robinson in a statement. “I’ve known Zach since the MCA Records days, and to now have the opportunity to work close with him with our catalog, as well as with new songwriters and publishers we are signing to our roster, will only help take Sugar Hill Music legacy to the next generation.”
