Nas Says “Guilt,” “Ignorance” & Tendencies To Judge Fuel Racism

The George Zimmerman trial, during which ZImmerman was found not guilty of second-degree murder or manslaughter for fatally shooting Trayvon Martin, a 17-year-old black youth, has sparked countless discussions about the race and insitutional bias in the United States.

One such conversation was featured on CNN’s “AC360,” where Anderson Cooper hosted a town hall-style discussion. Among the speakers at the even was Nas, who offered his thoughts on the opinion that America is “post-racial.”

“It’s guilt. It’s guilt, it’s ignorance. People, we tend to judge each other,” offered the Queens, New York emcee. “If I don’t know something about you, Anderson, I’m going to judge you based on a bad experience I had with another white person. If you don’t know me and you walk down the street and you see me, my pants are hanging, you’re going to assume the worst.”

Nas concluded that American citizens have no choice but to learn to coexist. “We need to learn how to deal with each other, basically, because we’re starting to, at this point, America’s looking like barbarians.”

    Watch the interview below:

Nas has spoken extensively on the subject of race, and specifically the Trayvon Martin case as well. Race was the primary subject of his 2008 album Untitled, which was originally going to be titled the N-word.

Earlier this year, CNN called Nas Hip Hop’s “Finest” emcee.

      1. Stevie? Stevie Wonder thinks that Florida is the only Stand Your Ground state. He said he wasn’t going back to Florida. Someone needs to tell Stevie that he needs to add 19 other states to that list.

      2. Stevie wonder doesn’t know what state hes in now. Hope be boycotts VA too along with the other racist rappers. F*ck em.

      3. If Nas is a sellout, you can add every rap artist on TV, radio, movies, and magazines to that list. Any rapper in the mainstream spotlight would be a sellout.

    1. I agree, on mostly about the ignorance part. We tend to hate what we don’t understand and look for ways to justify that level of ignorance.

    2. If you want to be a racist, go beat up a whale or a dolphin, or any other mammal race, for that matter. Humans don`t have different races. We have different skin tones.. So basicly you are all tricked by the big finger who points at people and tell you, look at them, they`re weird! They`re nothing like us. Check the facts homie.. we are 99,8% identical in dna..

    3. everytime a black person gets rich or says some true shit you always got them few broke black bums who say your not real or uncle tom..

    4. i thought i would get more nas input if i watched the video, but everything he said was already in the transcript.

this only became a story because the author is anderson coopers cousin.

    5. as a close friend of Lil Wayne, I can confirm NaS is bi-sexual. he fought with Jay-Z cause Jay dated Dame Dash in 2001. den NaS called Birdman cause he wanted to sign to Cash Money but Birdman refused his gay ass. swag

    6. ‘We need to learn how to deal with each other’ it’s 20 fuckin 13. Sounds like some 1940’s shit. America is still stuck in the past. Im in the UK and we don’t get all this race shit u lot are so hung up on. Of course there’s still racism here like everywhere but races mix here all over. U would be shocked

    7. Nas is talking bassackwards. If he wants White America to better understand Black America, then we need to stop living and promoting the very stereotypes that keeps White folks on the edge. Black entertainment for the most part is glorification of everything wrong in our community from rap music/videos to reality tv. For what reason would a 40 year old millionaire who is far removed from the hood, still choose to wear his pants sagging? You can’t dress like a goon and demand respect at the same time. No wonder these white folks clutch there purses when a brother walks by.
We got to do better. Nas is no role model in life. A great rapper, but that’s where it stops.

      1. How is he no role model? He started from nothing and became a self made millionaire while creating classic hip hop music. So he chooses to wear baggy pants sometimes, he also dresses up when he feels to. He was on ESPN awards last year rocking a tux. Your whole vibe is “make Whitey feel more comfortable” which is some Uncle Tom shit. I’m not endorsing anyone acting the fool, every one should carry themselves with respect, but judging someone cuz of their skin color or clothing is just stupid. We are under no obligation to make the uptight and close minded White folks (not all WF) feel “comfortable”.

    8. People don’t care if your pants are sagging. They usually shake their heads in disgust when every word that comes out your mouth is fuck this, fuck that, or bitch or hoe. Or when your being loud for no reason, showing your tats off to anyone who can see. Nas is right. We need to learn to coexist, the problem is a lot of these punk ass kids today feel like the rules and laws of this country don’t apply to them. You have the right to be a fuck up, but you don’t have the right to cause trouble just because you don’t have anything better to do with your time.
