Teacher Suspended For Including Lil Wayne Lyrics In Homework Assignment

A South Florida eighth grade English teacher of The Charter Schools of Boynton Beach has been suspended after assigning Lil Wayne lyrics as part of a homework assignment to her students.

One parent, Vanessa Guzman, spoke with WPTV in Florida, regarding her disapproval of the teacher’s assignment, which included directions to underline examples of figurative language in Lil Wayne’s Cory Gunz-assisted “6 Foot 7 Foot” lyrics.

“This is crazy,” Guzman said in a WPTV report. “They shouldn’t be giving this to kids in school…I’m uncomfortable reading any of this…They shouldn’t be teaching this stuff in school for language arts. I mean, who in their right mind would give kids something like this?”

An excerpt from “6 Foot 7 Foot’s” follows:

Two bitches at the same time, synchronized swimmers
Got the girl twisted cause she open when you twist her
Never met the bitch, but I fuck her like I missed her
Life is the bitch, and death is her sister
Sleep is the cousin, what a fuckin’ family picture

The school headmaster, Wayne Owens, addressed the matter with a statement.

“The lesson was for students to learn to identify literary devices,” Owens said. “The teacher had already introduced Edgar Allen Poe and Shakespeare.  Students were having difficulty grasping  the concepts of literary devices such as: pun, simile, metaphor, so the teacher used colloquial material. This material did not meet the school’s standards and was not approved.  The teacher recognizes that it was totally inappropriate for a school assignment.”

Guzman says she understands the motivation behind assigning this task, but still holds that it is “not appropriate at all.”

The teacher, who had “an unblemished record” has been suspended for three days, according to WPTV

    1. It’s poetry dumbasses. The principle took away student’s right to learn because they are haters of wayne, just because father and son kissed.

      1. The princiPAL had standards and princiPLES. See what I did there? Lil Wayne has taken away your right to learn and you’re a hater of proper education.

    2. Does this teacher also have a magic school bus they used to travel back to 2010 with the class to when that song was relevant?

    3. Good on the school. 8th graders shouldn’t be forced to read that disgusting garbage that isn’t poetry in any way.

      1. Our English teacher did. We had to study the imagery used by Lupe, Common and Kendrick Lamar in their lyrics as a way to lead us into metaphysical poetry.

    4. Teacher shouldn’t of been suspended for that tho smh. Be sure to checkout thegrandreport, they have some good hip hop and viral videos on there

    5. I find it both interesting & puzzling that this teacher used such an unorthodox method to teach his students to think outside the box.

    6. I understand what the teacher was trying to do which is use rap lyrics to get them interested in the assignment but she could have used some without the explicit lyrics. She could have used the real g’s lasagna line.

    7. Couldn’t have used Nas, Biggie, Pac, Pun, Big L, Guru, Kendrick, or someone WHO HAS REAL FUCKING LYRICS!? Lil Wayne is trash and the only thing kids learn from that is how to have a seizure from ODing on syrup.

    8. Every kid is exposed to this kind of lyricism anyway, at least address it and educate them about how awful it is. Pretty sure every kid can handle the words fuck and bitch. Just teach your kid not to talk like that? don’t bitch about the damn lyrics till your child is reciting them okay?

    9. I would’ve chosen better lyrics, to a better song, but she probably went with a song the kids liked and new well. I wonder if the parents are outraged because she assigned it, but not when their kids listen to it freely on their own accord.

She’d tried to get them to understand using shakespear and poe, and it didn’t work. She tried something they’d be interested in.

I’d be interested in hearing if it worked or not – do the kids understand now?

      1. I would’ve chosen better lyrics, to a better song, but she probably went with a song the kids liked and new well.

        knew*

And these kids are in eighth grade. This song came out three years ago, meaning they were in fifth grade when it came out. I highly doubt this is a song they “new well”

    10. Suspended for asking students to decipher one of the wackest rapper’s lyrics for homework?, sounds about right. Big up the school board for this one.

    11. before I looked at the draft four $4417 , I accept …that…my neighbours mother woz like actualy bringing home money in their spare time from their laptop. . there sisters neighbour has been doing this 4 only about fifteen months and recently paid the dept on there place and purchased a great Fiat Panda . straight from the source… http://www.Fb39.com

Out of all the rappers… You assign a Lil Wayne song? My goodness. How fucked up is this world?

    12. of all the website’s comments i was expecting to hate on lil wayne, at the bottom of that list is hiphopdx. wtf.

    13. Sounds about right. Tunechi is the greatest of all time. Pac and Biggie are dead and gone forever. Some of you haven’t grasped that yet. Tune is the most diverse artist hip hop has seen and ever will see. It’s bullshit the teacher got fired for these dope ass lyrics from one of the many gems off of Tha Cater 4. Before yall say I’m a 13 year old that doesn’t know anything, I’m 29. I lived through the 90’s with Pac and Biggie and everybody else. And I still say Tune has had more of an impact on Hip Hop than the two of the combined. Don’t like it? GET FUCKED.

      1. how does wayne’s dick taste? you sound like you were hit over the head with a sledgehammer. you don’t sound like you’re 29, you sound like a 12 year old skinny jean wearing one direction fan, you fucking faggot. pac and biggie are STILL relevant, they were REAL cats who rapped about REAL life situations, they had REAL talent and not to mention a little thing called CREDIBILITY. you should kill yourself for saying that lil gayne’s SHITTY & MORONIC lyrics are better than biggie’s or tupac’s. you cannot compare gayne’s bullshit to something like keep ya head up, brenda’s got a baby, juicy, big poppa, notorious thugs, until the end of time, who shot ya, unbelievable, warning, pain, temptations, holla if ya hear me and countless other hip-hop songs with actual MEANING. gayne is a fucking poser, a fucking phony, an untalented, whoopi goldberg on crack looking midget who wears female jeggings in front of millions of viewers & kisses men on the lips plus ymcmb is one the very worst labels in hip-hop history. fucking faggot. i’m glad the teacher was suspended for trying to indoctrinate youth with stupidity. what kind of future is america going to have if teachers resort to lil gayne “lyrics” as teaching material? go fuck yourself. one single punchline of biggie’s shits on gayne’s entire career. fucking faggot. as for record sales, gayne will never ever ever ever push half as many units as tupac & biggie combined. go jerk off to drake. like i said, KILL YOURSELF!

      2. There’s better rappers than Wayne in every era of hip hop that would make for a better poetry class. This ain’t got shit to do with Pac or Biggie in any way shape or form, that’s a rap rookie instant best rapper answer because they haven’t listened to anybody else to make that decision for themselves, and no Tunechi is not diverse, not as a rapper with one flow and hit or miss shit punchlines and wordplay, and he can’t even do storytelling for shit, but that’s your boy tho.

      3. If lil wayne died after tha carter 2 I may be able to agree with you, but unfortunately he went on to make tons of terrible music. Don’t get me wrong, there’s some good songs scattered in there, but overall he was really shitty and nowhere near the top of the rap game.

    14. Like these kids don’t already know all the lyrics or something.
Wow now the parents care. They should have stopped them from hearing it when it was on the radio three years ago and people actually listened to that fool.

    15. The teacher should have used different lyrics. Maybe one without profanity that way he or she won’t be in the shit they are in now. They could chosen any verse in the world without explicit lyrics.

I see what he or she was doing. One of my best teachers at my old college taught us how to subnet networks by comparing it to drug dealing. They had nothing to do with each other but he used it as a way for us to think about the math. It’s a very good technique.

    16. Apparently the teacher meant well, she/he just fucked up using 6 foot 7 foot in an assignment to identify literary devices. It is what it is.

    17. This is a decent idea, picking rap lyrics to get kids interested in English. Probably could have picked a better lyricist than lil wayne though

    18. This just shows good decision making skills on the part of the teacher.

Seriously, what did they think was going to happen? What an idiot.

    19. I’m not a huge fan of Wayne but this is yet again spitting in the face of our culture. How is Wayne’s content deemed not safe for school and Shakespeare’s is. This world just isn’t made for use to thrive.

      1. to answer your question, shakespeare wrote tragic love stories and didn’t come anywhere close to writing a curse in his life. did you read the lyrics in question? i dont care if 99% of 8th graders out there have heard this all before, having it given to them by someone who’s supposed to be a positive adult role model for them promotes it and encourages them to think in lil wayne’s mindset and use his words, and the last think this country needs is more people like lil wayne. shakespeare never said anything messed up, and if he did nobody that age can understand what he’s saying anyway. the lil wayne lyrics that were given, on the other hand, were “Two bitches at the same time, synchronized swimmers
Got the girl twisted cause she open when you twist her
Never met the bitch, but I fuck her like I missed her
Life is the bitch, and death is her sister
Sleep is the cousin, what a fuckin’ family picture”

      2. “shakespeare never said anything messed up, and if he did nobody that age can understand what he’s saying anyway”

true that brother. i still dont know what half that shit meant

    20. If you’re gonna give your students rap lyrics, don’t give them they lyrics of an ignorant motherfucker like Wayne. Give them some Krs-One, or Talib Kweli.

    21. The teacher should have their hearing checked, subjecting kids to dogshit lyrics. What teacher is dumb enough to assign that without consequence? Probably some poser teacher trying to be cool.

    22. ya that’s an excerpt from the song. is that the excerpt that the teacher used though. if it’s not, that’s pretty misleading.

    23. my english teacher used empire state of mind by jay z for an asignment like this. those lyrics are a bit more school appropriate than this song

    24. Dis nigga sniffs male underwear, true shit, I worked backstage at several of his shows & he specifically requests used male underwear to sniff. He pays well for it too, I never sold him mine but another guy on our crew use to be one of his regulars. Shit is gross but true.

    25. I can’t honestly believe that out of all the websites out there a hip hop website is also agreeing with the school’s victorian attitudes. The teacher used an explicit Lil Wayne song because this is the honest truth, kids will pay far more attention to it if there is a lot of cursing. Kids love the profanity and vulgar lyrics so the teacher used an explicit song because he knew they would pay attention to it. Every grade in someone’s development is a completely different experience and you can’t treat 8th graders like children or they will hate you for it.
