Big Pun’s Legacy Celebrated On Anniversary Of His Death By Raekwon, Fat Joe & Pete Rock

    Big Pun, who died after suffering from a heart attack and respiratory failure February 7, 2000, is being honored today (February 7), the anniversary of the day of his death, by several rappers, producers and fans. 

    Big Pun, a Bronx native who had Puerto Rican roots, was 28 years old and nearly 700 pounds when he died in White Plains, New York. He was best known for “Don’t Wanna Be a Player,” a selection that appeared on his 1998 debut album, Capital Punishment. He is the first Latino solo emcee to attain a platinum album, an achievement he earned for his debut album. Pun also rapped that he was “the first Latin rapper to baffle your skull,” a boast he made on “The Dream Shatterer,” a selection form Capital Punishment.  

    Big Pun’s son, Chris Rivers, has also celebrated his father’s legacy with “Beware,” his take on his father’s cut off Capital Punishment. Listen to Chris Rivers’ “Beware” here
