Reggae Great Buju Banton Released From Prison After Serving 8 Years

Grammy Award-winning aritst Buju Banton has reportedly been released from a U.S. prison roughly two months early. According to the Jamaica-Gleaner, the reggae luminary left the McRae Correctional Institution in McRae, Georgia on Friday (December 7) after serving eight years for possession of cocaine with intent to distribute.

The United States embassy hasn’t revealed when Buju will be transported back to Jamaica. In a statement, Buju laid out his post-prison plans.

“Having survived, I want to share the good news and strength of my music,” Buju said. “I just want to continue making music, which I’ve devoted my life to. I look forward to the opportunity to say a personal thanks to my fans and everyone who supported me.”

Buju was arrested in 2009 and convicted in 2011 of conspiracy to possess with the intent to distribute cocaine, possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking offense and using a telephone to facilitate a drug trafficking offense, although the judge dropped a weapons charge.

He was initially sentenced to 10 years in federal prison.

Buju has collaborated with several Hip Hop artists during the course of his career. In 1999, he teamed up with Terror Squad on “Rudeboy Salute.” Four years prior to that, he was featured on 2Pac and The Notorious B.I.G’s posthumous collaborative cut, “Runnin’ (From The Police).”

    1. I’m pretty sure he gave a false confession to an undercover on a plane just to sound cool, like “yeah bro I move hella kilos” but like just saying that because of peer pressure. Or maybe he really was a kingpin, idk, but the defense was pretty convincing.

    2. Great news. He should leave the evil Babylon USA. Look forward to more great music. I’m sure he’ll get hero’s welcome in Jamaica.

      1. You realize that Buju Banton recorded songs that were 100% calls for people to murder gay men? The whole subgenre of murder music is built on that idea.

You can try to muddy the issue, but modern reggae and dancehall have some really fucked up problems. Calling for the murder of gay men being one of those things.

          1. I like the track but don’t like the message. But you wanna bring up the Bible? The book written by men pretending to be the word of God? OK…

        1. Women is uhh the greatest God put pon the land….. you dare dispute that

Peter is for Paul Peter nuh fi Jan
Suzette not for Paul Suzette is for Anne
          Where the mooma clat
          Dem get dat from???

Where did they get that from? Just answer that is all I ask lol

      2. He made one song like that in the early ’90s, and I could be wrong about this but I’ve always been told that he recorded it shortly after some high profile case involving a gay serial killer in Jamaica. Whether that’s true or not, to hold that against him all these years later is quite petty.

    3. Besides BOOM bye bye. Gimme the names of all the songs calling for the killing of gay people. He wasn’t the first dancehall artist to write lyrics like that…..and he won’t be the last. In fact, he’s written a ton more positive records. I don’t condone the lyrics but state your thoughts based on facts. Many very popular dancehall artist have similar songs. For one. Check Shabba Ranks catalogue.

    4. And the black people who hate black people. With reason. Savage much? Let me guess, you’re white? Hahaha

    5. Don’t go back home Buju! Jamaica has become a shithole! Don’t know what they’re doing back home but I’ll only return if there’s a death in the family. Sad state of the place. Anyway, you’re lucky to be free after that idiot move you pulled.
