Everybody’s Got Their Own Freshman Picks

This week, XXL Magazine released its annual Freshman Class cover and, as expected, the internet exploded with what can only be described as extreme disdain. There were questions about the relevancy and overall clout of the chosen artists but also the relevancy of the outlet itself.

One of the more entertaining by-products, though — as in past years — is the volume of artists, tastemakers and fans who have been offering up their own lists.

Rapper Danny Brown named his favs:

    1. This is a terrible list. xxL.
If this is the future og “hip hop”, i’m probably gonna go dig a hole and die. Sick and tired of this shit, yet we do nothing. We still listen and give them money, instead of supporting the real ones and try to help them get success. We are all complaining but are doing nothing. Fucking Call your radio station, and tell em what you wanna hear (Ice Cube – Good Cop Bad cop, for example)
I Think G Perico should have been on here. He is VERY talented, just needs more diversity. But maybe it is best, that he is not on the list Being on xxL would just mean he sucks.
Oh and BTW, i am 16, so dont give all young people the fault, most parents just did not learn their kids what actual Hip Hop is. We have to help them.

    2. the list is fine with me. everyone wants some backpacker “real hip hop” underground rapper that no one has heard of before on the list, but these are dudes that have made names for themselves and have huge internet followings. and you’ll be seeing more of them in the future. everyone was saying yachty and uzi weren’t gonna blow up, but look at them now.

    3. People still waiting on somebody to tell them who to listen to or who is hot in 2017. SMH. Nobody has ever given a fuck who was on the cover of this shit. The people who grind the hardest bubble to the top, especially if they can find their unique lane that the public wants right now with every person in the world wanting to be a rapper today and thus watering down the product. Hell, the 2 biggest hip op artists now, Drake and Kendrick Lamar, I’m pretty sure neither ever appeared on that shit.

      1. It has keep gotten worse indeed but 2011’s Freshmen were; Meek Mill, Big K.R.I.T., Cyhi the Prynce, Lil Twist, Yelawolf, Fred the Godson, Mac Miller, YG, Lil B, *********Kendrick Lamar*******, and Diggy Simmons. XXL’s freshman list was actually quite decent around late-2000. I’m fine with Kamaiyah, XXX and Carti though.

      1. Mozzy got snubbed a couple years now. last year he lost the popular vote to lil yachty…. I’ll have to check out Tee Grizzly too if XXL passed on him he must be decent.

        1. The sad part is, he gonna keep getting snubbed. This is the music world we live in. There’s a difference between between it for the fame; doing it for the money; and doing it for the culture. Only 2 of those things can be done together, and only one gets you not on this list

    4. AOC Obama out rappin all these cats & he’s far from a word Smith but I can least listen to it not to mention he a real cat from the mud

    5. They snubbed the fuck outta tee grizzley…..and then theyll turn around and try to throw him on there next year even though he BEEN out! Kamaiyah and kap I don’t understand. They seem like old news. I would call this list wack but i never had high expectations.

      1. hip hop aint dead or dying, no matter how hard these incompetent retard writers and staff at this site try

      Myke Bogan
      Brenton
      Bones
      Maxo Kream
      Mr. Mothafukin eXquire
      Playboi Carti
      Hoodrich Pablo Juan
