Ab-Soul touched on Black Hippy’s future plans during his SKEE Live appearance this week (June 17). When host DJ Skee asked the TDE-emcee about the collective’s next release, Soul said, “I’m trying to tell [Top Dawg] to tell Dr. Dre to just let us make Detox. Wouldn’t that be crazy? The Black Hippy album should be Detox.”
Along with Ab-Soul, Black Hippy consists of Kendrick Lamar, ScHoolboy Q, and Jay Rock—each of whom are signed to Top Dawg Entertainment. The #controlsystem-emcee revealed that ScHoolboy Q came up with the name “Black Hippy,” but it was TDE CEO, Top Dawg’s decision to create the group.
“[Black Hippy] is just an idea to bring all of our audiences together and creating a collective that would trap all of our fans [into one group],” he said, after detailing how he was first signed to TDE.
“Sounwave, my producer—my first recordings were over his beats,” Ab-Soul said. “We were doing that and then we got older. I guess he eventually linked up with [TDE]. We linked back up and he just brought me through. It just kind of fell in line. I had a good conversation with Punch that night and the next day, me and Jay Rock and [Kendrick Lamar] were working on a joint and it just fell in line.”
During the interview, the Carson, Californian credited his label’s success to being “a little bit more than just a company.”
“We’re really brothers,” Soul said. “We all really want to see each other do well. As much as it is friendly competition—I do want to be the best rapper in the world, too—it’s in the same way I want Kendrick to be the best, I want to see Q be the best. It’s a real interesting feeling but I think that’s what kind of keeps us all in line.”
When asked for what he would artistically most like to be remembered, Ab-Soul said, “Balance. I want to be just as light as I am dark.”
Earlier this week (June 17), Ab-Soul released “World Runners” featuring Lupe Fiasco and Nikki Jean, which is included on his next album, These Days… The project will be available June 24.
The full interview will air on SKEE Live this Friday (June 20) at 8PM EST on AXS TV.

Whats make dis nigga think some black hippy bullshit would come close to a Dr. Dre classic? Without Kendrick no on e would give a shit about these fools. Q’s album was wack, this motherfucker has no hype, Jay Rock has some allright shit. But everyone wanna suck all they dicks because of Kdot. WEAK!
spoken like a true hater. They are a power group for a reason and well respected not only by fans but by their peers. You should actually listen to the music before you start talking out your ass
funny because if Dre put out Detox as his own most of it’s best lyrics would probably be written by TDE members. Just have Dre produce it, all of them with the possible except of Q are much better rappers than he is at this point.
Dre was never really a rapper. Its almost like saying diddy is a rapper.
Like many users on this site he just an old head who stays living in the fucking 90s lmao.
these fools are weak
This rick gonzales lookin nigga on some welfare deal his homies gave him. Kick this fool and Schoolboy off TDE and let kendrick and jay rock run the show.
TDE on it would be cool, except for ab-soul tho that nigga is weak, should have other west coast artists on it as well, especially Game
black hippy seriously? a hippy is a white guy trying to act black therefore black hippy is a black guy trying to act like a white guy trying to act black. black people stay losing.
That’s the dumbest comment on this article.

I look like Eazy E! LOL
he right let em detox
IF HE HADN’T MENTION THE IDEA PUBLICLY, THERE COULD’VE BEEN A POSSIBILITY OF DRE (CO)-PRODUCING THE BLACK HIPPY ALBUM… NOW IT WON’T HAPPEN FOR SURE.
TDE troll a lot lol.
Nutz to ya nose to ya lips to ya chin
TDE can’t stand next to Strange
Yeah but not everyone wanna listen to edgy ass niggas talkin bout corny ass shit. I get that most of them are very good and lyrical rappers but they be on that corny ass horrorcore shit sometimes lmaoooo
Very true, I respect a lot of what Tec and Strange Music do, but their content and subject matter is extremely corny.
do you know how epic this would be? it would be an instant classic.
