Dayshen McKenzie suffered from a deadly asthma attack while attempting to flee from a mob of young men in Staten Island.
According to the New York Daily News, 16-year-old Dayshen McKenzie was chased after with a gun and called the n-word as he attempted to run away from a group that consisted of several young, white men and one Hispanic man.
One woman, who witnessed the encounter and attempted to administer aid to McKenzie, referred to the incident as “murder.”
“To me, it’s murder,” Diane Fatigati, an ex-NYPD officer and 9/11 responder said while speaking with the New York Daily News. “They were chasing him — that’s a crime. You’re hunting them because they’re black … You’re calling them a n—-r.”
The group of young men reportedly chased McKenzie and friends following a prior issue the two groups had over a girl.
Following the pursuit, the high school sophomore and aspiring rapper, who reportedly forgot his asthma inhaler, collapsed and died from an asthma attack.
No arrests have been made following the incident, which took place last Friday (May 27). McKenzie’s mother, Tisha Richardson is hoping that someone will be held accountable for the death of her son.
“The sadness turns to anger,” Richardson said. “I want justice for him. Somebody should be held accountable.”
