A rap video made by seven inmates in a South Carolina prison has led to the men collectively getting nearly 20 years of additional time added to their respective sentences, according to BuzzFeed.
Published of the YouTube channel of LightworkerTV in March 2014 and eventually WorldStar, the six-minute clip is labeled “South Carolina Inmates Film 1st Ever Music Video In Prison!”
The South Carolina Department of Corrections launched an investigation regarding the video in 2014.
The inmates — who are incarcerated for armed robbery, burglary and voluntary manslaughter, among other crimes — were labeled as creating “security threat group” material and being in possession of a cell phone, for which they were sentenced to a collective 7,150 days, or nearly 20 years, in solitary confinement.
“Their placement is not just tied to that rap video,” Stephanie Givens, a spokesperson for the South Carolina Department of Corrections, said during an interview with BuzzFeed. “It’s the fact that they are gang members and a continued threat to safety.”
