Royce Da 5’9 Says DJ Premier Collaboration Was Supposed To Be With Slaughterhouse

It has been several years since Gang Starr that DJ Premier was officially in a group.

Recently linking up with Detroit native and Slaughterhouse member Royce Da 5’9, Premo and PRhyme are going to make something a little different than what DJ Premier released with Guru.

Recently talking with XXL, Royce spoke about the album and said it almost was a project between Premier and Slaughterhouse.

“We originally were supposed to do it with Slaughterhouse, and it didn’t pan out for a number of reasons,” Royce said when asked about working with DJ Premier. “So I ended up getting on the phone with Preem and just asking him how he felt about just me and him doing it based off of our schedules.”

Royce also said he wants to avoid being Guru and bring his own legacy to the table with the collaboration. Of course, he has nothing but high praise for the deceased emcee.

“I try to avoid that at all costs, and I try to big up Guru—God rest his soul—as much as I can,” he said. “We look at it like we’re kind of continuing the legacy. I don’t feel in my heart that I’m doing anything that he wouldn’t 100 percent approve of. So we just move like that.”

Also during the interview Royce Da 5’9 updated fans on the status of the Slaughterhouse album and his relationship with Eminem. He also talks about Total Slaughter and his admiration for battle rap.

    1. a premier produced slaughterhouse album would’ve been great! Too bad it didn’t pan out. I’m glad Royce came through though. I think he’s the only member out of the crew that I would want to hear on a solo joint album with premier (but I still love the rest of the group). Next up, I want that premier Eiht album…and then the Nas collabo! happy Friday y’all!!!

    2. Damn that would have been big if Primo produced an entire Slaughterhouse album… That’s the one thing their albums lack, consisten production

      1. He sounds like it’s 1998? So you mean he still makes hip hop? Lol.

Sorry he doesn’t make music for Iggy, t.i, kanye, lil Wayne, nicki Minaj, drake, tyga, Kidd kidd, jeezy, boosie, and all the other wack rappers out there. Lol.

    3. In order I would want dj premier to work with

      1. JERU the damaja,
      2. Nas
      3. AZ
      4. Royce da 59
      5. M.o.p

I would put jay z down there but that would never happen and jay z has changed his style of rapping.

    5. “No disrespect but Premo is done. He sounds like its 1998 he didnt grow as a producer.” …..if 85% of the new stuff that’s out now sounded like its 98 it would be dope lol when a new model of a car comes out car makers strive to make it better than the previous model. Some of these new ABC/123 tight Jean wearing rappers made hip hop sound worster than ever. Rather than making it sound dope. Now u have to search deep for the dope shit.

      1. What is old becomes new again once what is new runs it’s course. Extremely over busy beats and pop techno sounds that have been big in rap for the past 8 years are not as sought after as they were before. Unless you are trying to get on the radio which we know that isn’t going to happen. Outside of some songs on rock city the only time I heard royce on the radio was that gay ass lighters song with eminem and bruno mars

      2. OR maybe he doesn’t want to change his sound? hip hop music has not “evolved,” it has changed. and the songs from 20 years ago are STILL being played today, whereas the songs you hear today will be gone with the wind in 2 years, never mind 20.

    6. There’s a few dope DJ mixed premier and nas mixtapes around (DJ therion presents nas & DJ premier – hop hop is alve” and DJ premier vs nas). Where DJs have blended premo beats with nas acapella’s. Those are what I listen to when I want to hear some nas on premo beats. I might go bump them in my beats right now lol

    7. Premo makes those authentic hip hop sounding beats. He doesn’t make those hip hop/dance/club beats.(maybe one or two) Real dope hip hop makes u want to nod ur head not dance.

    8. Premier has gone. He’s lost his balls.
He came to Korea and gave Dynamic Duo his beats, and if you listen to those songs.. I am not saying that his changed style is bad.. but he lost the craftsmanship.

    9. “Beats headphones? Those are seriously lame and bad in the audio quality section.”…….Well I’ve got a pair and there fine “for me”.They give me the bass that I like. And if u want to discuss which headphones are the best quality then maybe u need to go on a site for headphones. Then ya’ll can discuss which headphones u recommend between each other.
