Dee-1 – “Uncle Tom”

Because somebody needed to say it. This is from Dee-1’s mixtape “I Hope They Hear Me Vol.2.” We’re guessing they’ll hear him after this one.

    1. I give this song a A for effort because he is actually talking about something. But here is the issue I think you are not properly defining uncle Tom. In my opinion a uncle tom is like Clarence Thomas,Herman Cain,Micheal Steele and most of todays black republican/conservative pundents who act as if race in America is largely a non-issue and there is no racism in the U.S. When it is our primary cast system only overshadowed slightly by class based on wealth recently. It looks like you are calling the average brother attempting to better himself or who just don’t fit the black stereotype i.e. wear the black uniform of today as dictated by the modern soul patrol. Is he saying if this guy lacks rhytmn, holds a day job, wears a suite, don’t speak slang etc… he is a uncle tom. Also what if his black co-workers are triffling and using race as a way to bait him into their circle? Now your grand ma story is something that shows how racism effected a persons image of self back in the day. These people were probably just attempting to survive everybody just aren’t the militant rebels ready to die for the cause, many probably so the cause as hopeless in their lifetime and just did what ever they could to try and make life better. So you know the emotional turmoil this may have caused within these folks before you judge them? NOPE you don’t so all of this makes your song fall flat except to folks he want to consider any blackman attempting to hold on to a job a uncle tom. If you join a gang you are expected to flag for them for life and for what? But you can’t conform to a corporate code to get some paper. OK light your pipe load your crack

      1. Another cosign. I lost respect for this cat wit this video and song. He is out of touch badly. He is basically giving young black males an option of putting themselve in a box of how they should dress, talk, and act and think or be a tom

      2. I thought i was the only person who had a problem with this video but after reading through the responses i guess i was wrong. I would have said everything you just said

    2. Awww Man. If a nigga got a job he a Tom? I thought this was sum real shit.

      What’s real:
      – 32.4% unemployment among our yougstas.
      – More niggas in prison today than were enslaved in 1850 (1 in 3).

Help save our people and STFU wit this bullshit. Last place as nigga… Anybody hatin on the next black man is a CRAB!

      Unite an prosper.

    3. wack n stupid….he’s misguided, i thought it would be good because of the title…u dont have to act like an idiot to be real…he didnt describe the real meaning of an uncle tom. a guy with glasses and a job n white friends isnt the true definition of an uncle tom

    4. dee-1 is so hit and miss with his content songs apparently…jay, 50, weezy is such a great song with so many real things said in it, and this song is just off in so many ways. still hopin for this dude to blow, much love.

    5. I thought he was going to talk about real uncle tom’s blacks who sell out other blacks. But what he potrays in this video is just reverse rasicm. People have a right to choose there clothes or their friends. Every one cant be a street thug prison bound idiot.fuck this song. He make it seem like having a successful job is being a uncle tom. I wonder who Dee-1 is working for. Does he want to see blacks down and in prison. it seems Dee-1 has either sold out or is a misinformed uneducated idiot. If he was not a rapper he would have to suit it up too. I dont think dee 1 has ever had to work a real job. I though he had talent from the other songs I heard.
