      3. (WTNH) – Violent crime in New Haven dropped by 11 percent in the first six months of 2011. New FBI data shows nationally, it fell by 6.4 percent.

        The Elm City also outpaced decreases in Connecticut’s five largest cities, although New Haven’s per capita crime rate remained the state’s highest.

        The figures were contained in a preliminary analysis of crime statistics by the FBI from Jan. 1 to June 30.

        Despite a homicide total that already has exceeded 30 for the year, overall crime decreased significantly in New Haven. The total number of homicides in New Haven newhavenhomicides.blogspot.com so far this year has now reached 32.

        Violent crime, in the FBI analysis, falls in four main categories: murder, rape, robbery and aggravated assault.

        In the first six months, New Haven’s homicide rate increased from 13 to 18, a 38 percent increase; rapes fell from 30 to 25, a 16 percent decrease; robberies increased from 338 to 350, up 3 percent, and aggravated assaulted dropped from 585 to 460, a 21 percent decrease.

        The net result was an overall decrease of 11 percent. Property crime in New Haven also fell by 11 percent in the first six months of 2011, compared to the first six months in 2010.

        In Bridgeport, violent crime dropped by 5 percent. In Hartford, violent crime fell by 2 percent. In Stamford, violent crime increased by 9 percent, and in Waterbury, violent crime fell by 8 percent.
