HipHopDX Premiere: During the writing of his most recent album, The Labyrinth, Zion I MC Zumbi went through a lot of changes, including the deaths of a close friend, grandmother and his father. The Bay Area artist’s new video for “Wings,” which is taken from the project, is all about crawling out from the depths of despair.

“I wrote it at the point where I felt like I had nowhere else to go but up,” Zumbi tells DX. “It’s a song asking for guidance to be my best and highest self. While I acknowledge all of my downfalls, I am still faithful that things will get better.”

Directed by Frank Door, the video captures the darker edge the song encapsulates. “We wanted to show the temptations that life has to offer, symbolized by the harpies, the true joy and beauty symbolized by my kids, and the wings hanging stoically, waiting to be acknowledged,” he explains. “The beat was produced by Decap, an up and coming San Francisco based beatsmith. When he sent me this, the production really spoke to me and fit what I was feeling, still recovering from the impact of my father passing away, and the concentric circles of drama I was creating as a result.”
