New York rapper Quay Dash represents a sect of rap that very often gets ignored. There’s no reason for this passivity by the public, her energy matches, if not rises above many of the rappers she’s competing with for attention.

Her identity as a black trans women plays a big role in her music, which is why her 2017 project this track comes off of is titled Transphobic. The issue of homophobia and transphobia or just the simple acknowledgment of the existence of queer people is a conversation that is often not taken seriously in the rap community. When it is, it is met with resistance, ignorance, and is all around a subject of conversation that could go really bad really quickly. Fortunately, our YouTube series “The Breakdown” has covered some ground in getting the conversation started in the community.
