Lest one has forgotten, the year 2016 hasn’t necessarily been the brightest for R&B superstar-in-the-making, Kehlani Parrish. But the healing process begins one step at a time, one day at a time and the 21-year-old vocal virtuoso has channeled her pain and harnessed it into creating the type of music that landed her on the Grammys red carpet earlier this year.

Never one to shy away from her emotions (even with the stop-and-stutter social media updates), Kehlani rips the pages from her diary and gives her loyal following 100 percent of her soul with “Advice,” the new single from her upcoming debut, SweetSexySavage. It’s within the record’s life pulse does the truth come out as she belts, “I almost lost my mind/I left myself behind/I almost crashed and fell right from the sky/I took a chance on this/I took too big a risk/And now I’m left with pain to get me high,” a melodic and direct reference to cyclone of drama that almost claimed her life earlier this year. She even details her disastrous past relationship on the chorus with the telling lyrics “Cause how is the man of my dreams not a man of his word?” and “You had to break me, take me/To make me better/But I had to save me, baby.”
