Six-piece Detroit rap collective, BandGang (Biggs, PaidWill, Lonnie Bands, Masoe, Javar, and AJ), has shared a new full-length project titled WDW 2 (What Dotts Wanted 2) in its entirety. BandGang’s rise to notoriety in their hometown was recently spotlighted on VICELAND’s Noisey Detroit episode, and showcased the group’s massive regional impact.
Two of the BandGang’s projects, 2015’s What Dotts Wanted (WDW) and the aforementioned WDW 2, were named after someone the group was close to in their neighborhood who had tragically passed away.
“Dotts is PaidWill’s Uncle and he was always looked at as the coolest one in the hood,” BandGang Lonnie explains to DX. “We named these projects What Dotts Wanted and What Dotts Wanted 2 after him because he was the one who was always with the rappers, but never once tried to rap himself. He made us go harder with the music, and then after he died, we told ourselves that we gotta go even harder because this is what Dotts would’ve wanted from us.”
With one of the most distinctive voices in the click, BandGang Lonnie is confident in his city’s emerging rap scene. Not that Detroit hasn’t bred some legendary artists (i.e. Eminem), but a new breed of young MCs is intent on making their own mark.
“The Hip Hop movement in Detroit is starting to take off,” Lonnie says. “We’ve got a lot of talent in the city, we all just have to get our business-minded and we can continue to expand our takeover from there. Our music is the soundtrack for Detroit right now. Everyone in the city can relate to what we’re talking about and where we’re coming from with it. We’re the voice of the city, and the stuff we’re rapping about is really going on around us.”
