Rob Jackson is best known for his 2002 chart-topping single “Boom, Boom, Boom,” featuring Lady May, and now the Kentucky rapper is planning a big return in the game this year, starting with his new single “Pledge of Legions.”
“I see a current moving back towards what I feel like I’m good at,” Jackson says, citing mainstream rap stars like Kendrick Lamar who, like Jackson, excel at painting vivid portraits of real-life struggles and celebrations. “I see that undercurrent that’s bringing that real form of music back in Hip Hop. I wanted to be a part of that. The stars are aligned.”
In the past decade, the soft-spoken artist has worked largely behind-the-scenes: writing music, mentoring young artists and flexing his philanthropic muscle. It’s not that he wasn’t making his own music, but for some time, in the mid-2000’s, Jackson says the music that seemed to be connecting with rap fans “wasn’t what I felt like I’d like to be a part of.” With that being said, like all disciplined artists, he stayed patient and continued to create.

“I never really stopped making music,” he explains. “I was making my own little secret music. It was me doing what I do because I have to, you know what I mean? It must be done. It’s not up to me. But I’ve decided to once again share that music with the world.”
