When we asked how the song came about, the told us:

Dorian, one-third of our band and one-half of our production team, got struck across the head with an idea for the beat while he was driving through the city.  He was also struck with the melody for the chorus, but couldn’t find any words.  When he got to “Granny House” – my literal Granny’s house in the middle of Oak Cliff, where we would create during the witching hour four nights a week – him and I worked on the track.  Once we found the words for his chorus melody, we were off and running.  The track is mainly percussive elements, so we had a good ol’ time experimenting with different arrangements and cadences.  We quietly recorded the chorus that night at Granny House, but it wasn’t until our trip to New York City a month or so later that we allowed JayHawk’s extra loud ass to record his first verse.  After marinating on the track for a second, I recorded my verse a month later at Tree Sound Studios, during our stay in Atlanta.  That sucka was a done deal after that.

Once we started getting the beat going that first night at Granny House, we conversed about it having a demented, possessed kinda feel about it.  This was in mid-August of 2014, in the midst of the Michael Brown murder and subsequent violence in Ferguson, so we were full of rage and hatred.  We’re all three big fans of Stanley Kubrick’sThe Shining, so in writing the chorus, we put ourselves in the mind of Jack Torrance.  However, since one of us as Jack Torrance would mean he’s a black man from Texas, he ain’t gon stay at an isolated hotel during the winter; instead, he’s sliding through Dallas one-deep, in a Chevrolet Chevelle, still demented, intoxicated, and looking for whoever want it, though.
