This isn’t Jake&Papa’s first time on HipHopDX but we wanted our readers to get to know them a little better. You might remember their smoking visuals for “Gun Charge” featuring Skeme. Check out their new single “I Got It.” Feeling it? Want to see more of them on the site? Let us know in the comment section below.

Name: Jake&Papa

Where are you from?

LA, by way of the 818

What inspires you to create music?

Real Life! There’s so much inspiration to soak up just from every day life. Whether it be directly connected with you or someone you know. Good days, bad days, love, heartbreak, sex, war, crime, happiness. These are things that happen around us all day every day. If it evokes thought or emotions, it can be used for a song.

Who are your musical influences?

We always say we were influenced by all the greats, in some form or fashion. Donny Hathaway, Sam Cooke, Stevie, MJ, R Kelly, Jodeci, Pac, Brandy, Elton John, James Taylor. The list goes on and on.

What is your mission in Hip Hop?

Our mission in music period, is to bring peace and solace for 3 min and 30 seconds or however long the song is. To make women feel good and to make sex beautiful again, through music.

What makes you different from other artists?

Sexual Warfare. That is what separates Jake&Papa from the rest. That sound. That genre. That sexual warfare type R&B.

What inspired this song/video?

“I Got It” was just a fun record that came together organically. One day we were in the studio with the homie Shonuff, he played the beat and I (Papa), just started freestyling. Literally had a song in like 20 min.

What other songs or projects are your working on?

Athena’s Erotica 2.0 is the EP and it’s available on iTunes NOW! Go experience that.

What’s next for you as an artist?

Work! We’re just working, non stop. Writing, recording and performing this music, putting people onto this sexual warfare.

What still surprises you about Hip Hop?

At this point, nothing surprises us. We’ve seen A Lot! (won’t say we seen it all) but we’ve seen some shit! Hip Hop, like R&B, is so diverse that you just get used to the different styles and sounds operating as one.
